Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

The British Embassy in Madrid is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking to recruit a GOV.UK Content and publishing officer (Communications).

The main purpose of the role is to create, review and publish high-quality written communication on the GOV.UK website for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). This includes corporate communications from the UK, guidance for UK nationals travelling and living abroad, and publishing for UK embassies, high commissions and consulates in Europe and the Americas. You’ll be responsible for overseeing and increasing the capability of devolved publishers in these regions.

You'll use GOV.UK to mobilise audiences to champion UK foreign policy, promote our values and protect our interests. You’ll create high-quality digital communications to promote the interests of British citizens, safeguard the UK’s security, and defend our values.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**:
Web publishing:

- Prepare, review and publish corporate and policy content on GOV.UK, working with policy teams and other internal stakeholders, ensuring content complies with Government Digital Service (GDS) guidance, including accessibility standards;
- Support publishers in UK embassies, high commissions and consulates to review and publish content on GOV.UK, including world news, guidance and services for British nationals living and travelling abroad;
- Increase publishing capability and standards in UK embassies, high commissions and consulates specifically in Europe and the Americas regions;
- Review and publish corporate FCDO blogs in line with departmental best practice; support the administration of the blog website.

Website content design and content management:

- Collaborate with communication, policy and service delivery colleagues to write and review content for GOV.UK, ensuring it complies with GDS guidelines and meets users’ needs;
- Use data to inform and iterate content design, including Google Analytics and website feedback;
- Produce evaluation reports on key GOV.UK content for stakeholders;
- Work with policy and service colleagues to project-manage information required to publish new content or services on GOV.UK, as part of larger or global projects.

Strengthening the global publisher network:

- Ensure all content published on GOV.UK is high editorial quality and meets GDS guidelines and accessibility requirements;
- Carry out regular quality checks on GOV.UK content published in Europe and the Americas. Provide regular feedback, guidance and training to regional publishers and policy clients;
- Provide bespoke training and support for new GOV.UK publishers in Europe and the Americas to increase capability and standards.

General support/British Embassy Madrid:

- Respond to questions from web publishers in the UK and in regions about how to publish on GOV.UK Publisher;
- Suppport the delivery of communication by British Embassy Madrid and wider Spain network;
- Contribute to corporate embassy activities, where appropriate.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Fluency in English (both oral and written, minimum C2 level*);
- At least 2 years’ experience working on digital publishing and using a content management system or in a digital communication role;
- Experience of writing and editing corporate content in English language, working to organisational editorial guidelines and style guide;
- Proven proofreading and editing skills, with strong attention to detail;
- Effective communication and customer-service skills;
- Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Evidence of identifying user needs to design and iterate content;
- Experience of using data to inform decisions, and seeking user feedback;
- Experience publishing on GOV.UK;
- Experience of delivering projects across a large or global organisation.
