The opportunity

We are launching a new Renewable Energy underwriting practice and are looking for a highly experienced Senior Underwriter to help lead its development. This is a unique opportunity to shape the strategy and appetite, product offering, and underwriting process from the ground up, building a growing and sustainably profitable portfolio from the first account. The successful candidate will bring deep technical expertise, market insight, an entrepreneurial spirit, and strong broker and client relationships to position us as a credible lead market in the renewable energy insurance space.

Our entry into the European market, initially focused on and based in Spain, is a continuation of our effort to build and invest in a market-leading global offering to address the critical and emerging renewable energy segment. In this role, you will be joining a growing and dynamic global Power & Renewables team, responsible for developing and executing our local strategy, but with the capabilities, resources, and support of an established global organization behind you.

This job includes underwriting large, complex or specialist cases to achieve new business growth. You will spend the majority of your time driving underwriting decisions, actively contributing to business development activities and liaising with customers and brokers.

You will deal with customers and third parties independently and on a one-to-one basis. You will be a senior member within team where you will act as point of contact for future junior members. You have strong analytical, relationship management and communication skills.

Some of the Senior UW Renewable Energy responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Works alongside senior leadership to develop business strategy, underwriting processes and procedures, and a go-to-market product offering.
  • Maximizes opportunities for underwriting profitable new and renewal business by leveraging business relationships, product knowledge, and underwriting acumen.
  • Analyzes underwriting submission information including, but not limited to, policy wordings, insured values, engineering and risk control reports, loss history, contractual agreements, and financials to assess risk quality and fit with risk appetite. Uses available tools and resources to support risk analysis and underwriting.
  • Builds and manages a book of business with responsibility for underwriting quality and portfolio characteristics. Executes underwriting strategy, including portfolio management, self-audits of new and renewal business, and well documented approvals of underwriting edits. Ensures compliance with underwriting guidelines, standards and assigned underwriting authorities.
  • Drives new business growth through the development and maintenance of an active target account list, tracking prospects, account rounding, missed opportunities, and/or other key business development metrics.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of exposures and key coverage issues. Makes underwriting decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks within the highest production underwriter authority levels. Implements underwriting decisions in compliance with state local laws.
  • Develops and manages superior working relationships with producers to successfully promote achievement of mutual growth and profitability goals and to supply the appropriate products and services. From a sales perspective, has the ability to identify gaps in coverage and/or services, understands where the company can make a difference based on those gaps and uses that information to help retain or obtain a customer.
  • Frequently travels to key producers/accounts and remains highly visible in the marketplace.Anticipates the needs of customers and broker partners, analyzes trends, and implements proactive strategies that best position the business. Understands and communicates the company's underwriting appetite and generates qualified business in support of that appetite. Monitors broker action plans and participates in account management and marketing meetings to best position the business for the future.
  • Regularly schedules meetings, events, lunches, and entertainment with key broker partners.
  • Works closely with and establishes strong business partnerships with other departments, including claims, actuary, and risk control staff in an effort to better service producers and accounts.
  • Works collaboratively with global colleagues in accordance with established operating principles in an effort to grow our global presence, book, and profitability.
  • Mentors and coaches less experienced underwriters. Develops and leads technical training and provides guidance to other departments within the company, as needed.
  • Possesses and maintains strong professional knowledge of competitive, regulatory, and legal environments. Proactively monitors developments in both the insurance and renewable energy markets to best position the business with respect to the latest innovations, trends, and emerging risks.

The expertise you bring

  • You have a Bachelor and/or Master degree and solid experience in Renewable Energy, broader Power/Energy lines or a related (Construction, Energy Property, etc.) specialty underwriting practice. Your experience includes issuing terms, quotes, and policies as a lead insurer (not just follow capacity).
  • Strong knowledge of engineering and construction risks associated with renewable energy projects.
  • You have an analytic mind and you are comfortable taking ownership and accountability, with a proven ability to execute in accordance with company Plans.
  • Solid market reputation and exceptional relationships with key national and regional brokers.
  • You have an entrepreneurial mindset; experience launching or expanding a product line is highly desirable.
  • You are a team player and are seen as a role model by peers and more junior staff.
  • Fluent English & Spanish.
  • Strong ethical standards and alignment with sustainability values.
