Lead 3D Character Artist Job Description

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead 3D Character Artist to join our team and contribute to our next project. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in game development and character art, with experience in leading and mentoring a team of artists. They will be responsible for creating high-quality character assets, collaborating with designers, concept artists, technical artists, and animators, and ensuring the team's deliverables are completed on schedule.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor a team of artists, providing clear tasks, goals, and regular feedback.
  • Create a diverse range of high-quality character assets, from sculpting to implementation in the engine.
  • Partner with producers to delegate tasks, plan estimates, and arrange meetings to ensure the team's workload is manageable and deliverables are met.
  • Work with clients to uphold their artistic vision and ensure outgoing work is technically sound and meets technical standards.
  • Collaborate with Tech Art and Engineering to ensure assets are functionally sound and optimized for engine/platform constraints.
  • Help expand the capabilities of the Character Art team through training, team building, process refinements, and candidate recruiting and hiring.
  • Explore opportunities to innovate, streamline tools and processes, and champion best practices for the team.
  • Engage in technical and aesthetic problem-solving efforts through to completion.
  • Proactively elevate team concerns to the larger team and ensure the discipline is well represented.
  • Help recruit talented artists and provide mentorship and coaching to help them grow.
Requirements
  • 6+ years of experience in character art with 2+ years of experience as a Lead Character Artist in game development using Unreal and/or Unity.
  • Expert knowledge of anatomy, form, silhouette design, and detail hierarchy.
  • Exceptional sculpting and poly modeling skills for generating organic and hard surface character assets.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of multiple major 3D and 2D packages (3DS Max or Maya, Zbrush, Photoshop, and Substance) and techniques for Characters, Creatures, and Costuming.
  • Demonstrated experience creating PBR textures and a strong understanding of the PBR texturing workflow.
  • Deep technical knowledge of modern pipelines, workflows, and techniques for developing characters with clean topology.
  • Passionate about mentoring others and managing, leading, and growing a world-class character art team.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and communication skills.
  • Great team spirit and proactive attitude.
