Project description: 

This work is framed under the research line of automated analysis of fetal ultrasound images using machine learning, which is carried out by Dr Bernardino at the Engineering Department of Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

Fetal and neonatal complications remain one of the main causes of death, especially in the developing countries. Early detection of abnormalities has been shown to improve the management and outcome, and for this ultrasound is the main imaging modality since it is portable, cheap, non-invasive and non-ionising. However, automatically analysing fetal ultrasound images is challenging, due to the high level of noise, high variability of the texture and lack of data. To address these limitations, we are developing an open-source python simulator, able to generate realistic ultrasound images.

The candidate will help in tasks related to the development of an open-source Python library for the simulation and processing (PyMUST), which is a translation of an existing library in Matlab.

Tasks to be performed:

Main tasks:

  1. Translation of Matlab code to Python.
  2. Creation of documentation for the software
  3. Management of the github repository of the PyMUST library.

The duration of these tasks is estimated over a period of 3 months.

Group and complement: Group 3 + Level u

Dedication and working hours: Part time (10h/week).

Planned remuneration approx: 8.193,22 € gross per year

Financing fund: Ayuda PRESP AEI/PRTR/MCIN RYC I Gabriel Bernardino, "Learning physics & consistent representations for fetal echocardiographic understanding", financiado por MICIU/AEI/ / y por el FSE+, UE.

Requirements: 

  • High school-FP2.

The expected start date is March 10th 2025, the job is in Barcelona.

Selection criteria: The selection of the candidates will be made through evaluation of the curriculum and, where appropriate, with the carrying out a test and/or interview. Valuation will be as follows:

1- Academic Training (0-20 points).

  • Studies in Biomedical Engineering.

2- Other professional training and experience, adequacy to the proposed profile (0-60 points):

  • Experience in processing medical images and signals, especially ultrasound radiofrequencies.

  • Programming skills in Python (numpy, matplotlib) and Matlab.

  • Knowledge of the Matlab library MUST and its python version PyMUST.

3- Other merits (0-20 points):

  • Spanish, Catalan and English.

  • Contribution to open-source projects in github.

The minimum score to pass the selection process is 75 points. The candidate with the highest score in the selection process will be offered the job.
