The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) is seeking a highly motivated Master's student to join our Computational Biology group. Our team, led by ICREA professor Alfonso Valencia, is focused on understanding the complex relationships between proteins and their interactions in bacteria.
The successful candidate will contribute to a project aimed at identifying species-specific protein interactions in bacteria using phylogenetics and coevolution. This will involve analyzing and interpreting differences in diverse bacteria protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks to detect functional differences in specific metabolic pathways. The ultimate goal is to gain a better understanding of different species of bacteria and their role in the ecosystem.
The researcher will be part of a dynamic research group within the Life Sciences department, which integrates independent senior scientists working on various aspects of computational biology. The team has access to sophisticated HPC environments, systems, and computational infrastructures, and establishes collaborations with experts in different areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and apply protocols to fine-tune and apply pLMs for studying relevant biological problems involving proteins.
- Perform sequence and structural-based analyses of proteins.
- Collaborate in the preparation and presentation of research projects.
- Participate in internal group meetings and other scientific discussions.
Requirements
- Education: Degree in Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, or any field related to biomedicine.
- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience: Knowledge of UNIX/Linux environments, good programming skills (Python), and experience with structural biology analysis tools (ChimeraX, ICM).
- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience: Experience with data analysis tools (pandas, matplotlib, seaborn) and machine learning tools (scikit-learn).
- Competences: Good communication and presentation skills, ability to work both independently and within a team, and fluency in spoken and written English.
Conditions
- The position will be located at BSC within the Life Sciences Department.
- We offer a full-time contract, a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, and an extensive training plan.
- Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration.
- Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement.
- Salary: We offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona.
