Job Title: Chief Technician

The Chief Technician is a key role within the Tyne Theatre and Opera House team, responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of our busy programme of events.

This role requires a high level of technical expertise, as well as excellent leadership and management skills. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a team of technical staff, ensuring that all technical requirements are met, and delivering a high-quality experience for our audiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the technical department, ensuring that all technical aspects of events are met and delivered to a high standard.
  • Line manage the Senior Technician and Theatre Technician, ensuring that their time and workload is managed effectively and efficiently.
  • Monitor permanent staff lieu time and holidays, and ensure that casual staff timesheets are signed off accurately for processing.
  • Recruit and manage casual and volunteer crew, and ensure that they are properly trained and equipped to carry out their roles.
  • Act as Duty Technician during events, and be responsible for the overall technical operation of the theatre.
  • Manage and monitor the Health & Safety in all backstage and on-stage areas, adhering to regulations and theatre policies and procedures.
  • Manage and monitor the technical equipment, ensuring that it is maintained and inspected regularly, and that accurate records are kept.
  • Improve and develop the operational efficiency and management of the technical facilities, and be involved in the capital programme development and contribute towards the technical equipping of the venue.

Requirements:

  • Experience of managing a team and managing projects and maintenance programmes.
  • Knowledge of theatre technical equipment and practices, and a sound understanding of health & safety regulations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to use initiative and be a self-starter, with a high level of attention to detail and good MS Office and IT skills.
