Position Title: PhD Researcher in Advanced Photovoltaic Effects
Research Group: Oxide Nanophysics Group
Project Overview:
The Oxide Nanophysics Group is at the forefront of exploring novel electronic properties driven by strain gradients, particularly flexoelectricity. This project is centered on investigating a remarkable flexophotovoltaic effect, where substantial photovoltages, exceeding the material's bandgap, are generated in certain semiconductors under mechanical stress. The objectives of this research are twofold: (1) to investigate the potential for achieving significant flexophotovoltaic effects in gradient-engineered thin films of perovskite oxides, and (2) to assess the impact of these photovoltages on the mechanical characteristics of the materials, specifically their deformation through photostriction. Success in these areas could lead to the development of next-generation solar cells with enhanced efficiency and innovative photo-mechanical actuators operable via light.
Key Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will take a leading role in this research initiative, requiring a strong sense of accountability, intellectual independence, scientific curiosity, and effective problem-solving abilities.
The anticipated responsibilities include:
• Fabricating gradient-engineered thin film devices utilizing advanced pulsed laser deposition and/or sputtering techniques.
• Evaluating their photovoltaic and photostrictive properties by modifying existing laboratory equipment, including atomic force microscopes, probe stations, interferometric microscopes, and x-ray diffractometers.
• Analyzing, interpreting, and critically discussing experimental results.
• Presenting findings in various formats, from informal group discussions to formal presentations at international conferences and writing articles for peer-reviewed journals.
Qualifications:
• Educational Background:
A Graduate Degree (BSc, licenciatura, or equivalent) in Physics or a related field is required. A completed Master's Degree in a relevant area (materials science, nanotechnology, photovoltaics, etc.) is preferred prior to the contract commencement.
• Knowledge and Skills:
Experience in condensed matter physics through summer projects or a Master's program is advantageous but not mandatory; comprehensive training will be provided by our group.

Working Conditions:
• Full-time position (37.5 hours/week)
• Temporary contract (4 years)
