About the Role

The Director of the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (ING) is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and operational management of ING within budget constraints. Reporting to the Programmes Executive Director of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), the Director must ensure efficient resource utilisation, compliance with regulations, and adherence to health and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Recruit and retain high-quality staff, particularly in senior roles, to drive research excellence and innovation.
  • Foster a culture of inclusivity and professional development, promoting a positive work environment that supports the growth and well-being of staff.
  • Coordinate resources for optimal efficiency, operating within financial limits, and develop an annual budget for ING Board approval.
  • Develop and communicate a long-term vision for ING, aligning with the strategic objectives of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).
  • Maintain relationships with ING users, host communities, Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC), and the Comite Cientifico Internacional (CCI) of the Canarian Observatories.
  • Maintain a high profile for ING through national and international public engagement, promoting the organisation's research excellence and impact.
About the Organisation

The Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (ING) is a world-class research facility located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma, Spain. ING operates under the coordination of the UK (STFC), NWO, and IAC, ensuring shared operation and observing time allocation on ING telescopes. The ING Board, comprising scientists and representatives from the funding agencies of the partner countries, provides oversight and strategic direction.

Person Specification

The successful applicant must be an astronomer with a proven track record of achievement in their field, as well as managerial experience in the operation of a research group or research facility, including financial budgeting and control. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Strong leadership and communication skills to manage international and multi-disciplinary teams in a highly demanding environment.
  • Awareness of the cultural differences between the three partner countries funding ING operations.
  • A sense of vision, commitment, and purpose to lead the longer-term future of ING, including awareness of developments in astronomical research and capabilities of other international Observatories.
  • Good knowledge of Spanish is highly desirable; if necessary, intensive language training will be provided prior to taking up the appointment.
  • The ability to work at an altitude of 2400m.
