About the RoleThe Director of the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (ING) is a key leadership position that requires a strong track record of achievement in astronomy and management experience in operating a research group or facility. The Director will report to the Programmes Executive Director of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and be responsible for ensuring efficient resource utilization, compliance with regulations, and adherence to health and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities- Recruit and retain high-quality staff, particularly in senior roles, to drive scientific research and innovation.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that supports professional development and growth.
- Coordinate resources to optimize efficiency, develop an annual budget, and ensure compliance with financial regulations.
- Develop a long-term vision for ING and communicate effectively with stakeholders, including the ING users, host communities, Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC), and the Comite Cientifico Internacional (CCI) of the Canarian Observatories.
- Maintain a high profile for ING through national and international public engagement and outreach.
The Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (ING) is a world-class astronomical research facility located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma, Spain. The facility houses the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) and the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), which are undergoing enhancements to remain at the forefront of astronomical research. The ING operates under the coordination of the UK (STFC), NWO, and IAC, ensuring shared operation and observing time allocation on ING telescopes. The ING Board provides oversight, comprising scientists and representatives from the funding agencies of the partner countries.
Core Functions- Deliver effective telescope operations to support world-class astronomical research.
- Facilitate research by the astronomical communities of the partner countries.
- Establish the telescopes as world-class and internationally competitive.
- Pursue top-quality astronomical research and training in observational astronomy.
The successful applicant must be an astronomer with a proven track record of achievement in their field and managerial experience in operating a research group or facility. The candidate must also have strong leadership and communication skills, as well as the ability to develop and implement a long-term vision for ING.
