About the Role

The i2CAT Foundation is seeking a visionary Director to lead its Software Networks Research Area. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for driving innovation in next-generation networks, exploring new ways to manage the networks of the future, and developing novel architecture paradigms that go beyond current technologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the achievement of the overall strategic objectives of i2CAT, focusing on scientific and technological excellence, as well as the generation of impact on technology, economy, and society.
  • Lead, coordinate, and manage a team of engineers and PhDs to achieve the goals of the SN area.
  • Develop the professional career of the SN area team members.
  • Define, update, and maintain a research & innovation roadmap of the area in coordination with the Director of Research and Development of i2CAT.
  • Foster cross-collaboration with other research and innovation areas of i2CAT to tackle multi-technological problems and challenges.
  • Manage resource planning for R&D in the different research lines of the area.
  • Foster research & innovation ideas within the team and identify relevant public funding programs for proposal development and submission.
  • Build and maintain a network of key people and organizations for establishing long-lasting and impact-oriented collaborations.
  • Coordinate the definition of technological assets with the Communication Technologies Director to impact standardization bodies and the market.
  • Identify and plan the strategy for the participation of SN team members in relevant scientific working groups to stay up-to-date on cutting-edge research problems and topics.
  • Contribute to the communication activities of i2CAT, providing guidance on the contents and audience targets for the different activities and outcomes of the SN area.

With over 15 years of international research experience, we have expertise in 5G, IoT, VR, and Immersive Technologies, Cybersecurity, Blockchain, AI, and Digital Social Innovation.

Requirements
  • PhD in Telecommunications Engineering or Computer Science (or related discipline).
  • Demonstrable post-PhD R&D experience of at least 10 years in the relevant field.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of networking technologies, Software Defined Networks (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Cloud Computing, Multi-access Edge Computing, Network APIs, Service Based Architectures, etc.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of 5G networks and their integration with Industry 4.0 and mobility verticals.
  • Experience in running collaborative R&I projects in the European framework (FP7, Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe).
  • Demonstrable scientific grant/proposal writing experience.
  • Experience in project management in the field of advanced digital technologies.
  • Ability and experience to manage uncertainty, with a proactive, constructive, and collaborative attitude.
  • Strong scientific/technical publication record.
  • Strategic vision, leadership capacity, and results orientation.
  • Analytical and resolving ability for decision making.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills.
  • English conversation level (C1).
  • Ability to dialogue and institutional representation.
  • Excellent soft skills to manage and lead a large R&D team and interact with other research areas and all support areas of i2CAT.
