As part of the Alexion Bold Ambition for 2030, we have the aspiration to reach 100 markets with our rare disease products. Currently Alexion either directly or through AstraZeneca's local teams has presence in approx. 70 markets. By the end of 2026 there are plans to add 15-20 markets on our path to reach 100 markets. In addition to the expansion in new markets, diversification of our entire portfolio of products/indications in existing markets is another priority. Finally, in some of these markets the patient penetration in our core indications is still significant below the benchmark of the established markets, so there is a growth opportunity by supporting that patients have access to our treatments.

We have established an Expansion Markets team to drive this ambition across a broad geographical scope, covering the so-called Emerging Markets, and some consolidated markets in Asia, Latam, MEA, Eastern Europe, and Russia/Eurasia.

Head of Business Expansion Strategy will report to the Head of Rare Disease Markets Expansion in the Alexion EUCAN and International Region and be a member of the Markets Expansion leadership team. In this role you will develop the strategy and ensure successful implementation of the strategy for expansion, diversification, and growth, ultimately ensuring that Alexion rare disease products reach more countries and patients.

This role will act as an internal champion and driver of the expansion and growth in the 3 dimensions:

Opening of new markets for our rare disease portfolio Expansion and diversification with our current and future portfolio Drive growth by supporting the local teams to identify and unlock existing access barriers.

He/she will work closely with our four Area Directors (Asia, MEA/Russia, Central and Eastern Europe and Latam), AstraZeneca local teams and the Alexion EUCAN & International and Global functions. He/she will play a critical role in coordinating efforts from the different functions involved, so that the countries receive the right support and focus to execute on their strategies. In this role you will lead a team of Market Expansion Leads.

You will be responsible for:

Explore with AZ local teams and Market Expansion Area Directors, opportunities for market expansion and support the preparation of any business cases.Educate local AZ colleagues on the RD business specifics and the importance of partnership with key local stakeholders (HCP, PAG, authorities, etc). Work with local teams on defining the market entry strategy: products, and indications.Support the implementation of the Commercially Sustainable Access framework (medical engagement, HCPs education, diagnostic pathways, engagement with policy makers, etc). Own and implement the new market entry process, monitoring that the market has the right focus/resourcing, but also the needed support from Global functions delivering on the different milestones. Support local teams to develop cross-functional access and price proposals and business case that reflects the policy, healthcare system and HCP contexts, market environment, patient journey, competition identified in the market.Collaborate with the Alexion Area Commercial Directors in the execution of the different expansion plans (country, product) keeping track of the different milestones' execution. Ensure the AZ local teams receive the adequate information and support from Alexion Global functions for the market readiness and deliver on the expansion plan objectives: TAs, GVAP, Medical and Governmental Affairs, Patient Experience Lead your Market Expansion team ensuring they perform aligned with the expectations supporting the local teams and collaborating with the Global Value and Access team. Act in the best interest for AZ/Alexion overall; models the company values and holds self-accountable for ensuring work meets the highest standards of ethics, compliance, and quality.

You will need to have:

Bachelor's degree in a Scientific, Business or Finance-related field, and an MBA or similar postgraduate studies Demonstrated strategic mindset, capacity to identify business opportunities and develop solid action plans. Ability to managed multiple priorities simultaneously and to function confidently under ambiguous conditions. Extensive in country or above country experience managing RD products, being exposed to complex access considerations. Communicates in a clear and engaging way with strong written and verbal English fluency.Proficiency in IT tools, being able to prepare impactful presentations.Ability to travel as determined by business priorities and travel policy.
