Firms increasingly rely on technologies developed outside their organizational boundaries, for example by licensing technologies, acquiring software and digital solutions, or collaborating with external technology providers. The project examines how firms access external technologies through these channels and how such access shapes their innovation, productivity, internationalization, digitalization, and environmental transition strategies. It also investigates how digital platforms and international technology trade are transforming technology markets, as well as how financial constraints and shortages of skills and technical expertise affect firms' ability to benefit from externally sourced technologies. The project addresses questions such as: (i) how does access to externally developed technologies sources impact digital and green transformations within firms? (ii) How does access to digital and green technologies improve firms' innovation, productivity and competitive advantages? (iii) how small-medium-size (SME) firms particularly exploit access to technology markets to improve their outcomes, (iv) which barriers and challenges prevent SMEs from digitalizing and becoming greener? (v) how does the trade of technologies impact the firm's strategies and behavior? (v) how do online platforms condition the access to technologies? The selected candidate will develop an independent doctoral research project within the broader research agenda, under the supervision of members of the research team, and will enrol in the PhD Program in Industrial Economics at the University of Valencia. The position offers the opportunity to work on research questions at the intersection of industrial economics, innovation, international business, and firm strategy, using firm-level and other microeconomic data.
