JOB POSITION:Predoctoral Research Position


PROJECT TITLE: Tracking the magnitude of secondary local sources of pollutants and potential impacts in Arctic and Antarctic lakes and terrestrial ecosystems under global warming.


PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This doctoral project examines how climate change affects persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Arctic and Antarctic ecosystems. The research combines field studies with long-term records of pollutants in Arctic char and Antarctic lake zooplankton to study changes in contamination and identify local secondary sources. It will also analyse polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in permafrost and lake sediment cores. The work includes field sampling and laboratory analysis. Participation in conferences will be encouraged, and research stays may be possible.


DURATION : Four years, subject to securing funding through an FPU or UVa-Santander predoctoral grant. The contract will be governed by Spanish regulations.


PLACE OF WORK: University of Valladolid (Valladolid and Soria campuses). The position also involves field sampling campaigns in the Arctic and Antarctica, including planned stays of four to six weeks at Spanish polar research facilities, such as Byers Camp and Deception Island, during the Antarctic summers of 2028 and 2029.


REQUIREMENTS:



  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, Marine Sciences, or related disciplines.
  • Good written and spoken English.
  • Strong academic record to support the predoctoral funding application.
  • Experience in analytical chemistry or chromatographic techniques, such as GC–MS, GC–MS/MS or LC–MS, is desirable.
