5+ years of post-qualification legal experience (PQE) with a focus on energy

As Corporate Counsel, AWS Energy, you will partner with AWS’ business teams to support renewable energy procurement, energy and water supply arrangements and delivery of energy and water infrastructure. You will also provide guidance on strategy, policy, and regulatory issues, including supporting AWS’s sustainability team in evaluating new initiatives and reporting requirements related to carbon emissions, renewable energy, and water usage throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
Key job responsibilities
- You will have responsibility for structuring, drafting and negotiating agreements, and counseling internal business partners on:
- Energy and water supply agreements
- Utility scale wind, solar and battery storage power purchase agreements
- Grid connection and energy infrastructure agreements
- You will support the business with high-level judgment and advice on:
- Energy compliance matters
- Changes to energy, carbon and water policy (e.g. EU's Green Deal)
- Energy and water strategy more broadly
- Business strategy in achieving AWS's ambitious sustainability goals
A day in the life
You will work directly with the various business teams, providing day-to-day advice, resolving issues that arise in existing commercial relationships, handling pre-litigation legal disputes and inquiries, and managing outside counsel for our current and new regions in EMEA. You will also be responsible for identifying opportunities for and implementing process improvements. In this role, you will also interact with our Sustainability, Public Policy, Public Relations, Accounting, Finance, Economic Development and Tax teams as well as the broader AWS Infrastructure teams. - A mix of law firm and in-house experience at an energy company or at a corporation with large energy needs
- Experience in representing corporate customers in energy contract negotiations
- Experience with renewable energy projects
- Experience with grid connection agreements and working with utilities
- Experience of energy public policy matters
- Experience with EU directives impacting energy agreements
- Experience in regulatory compliance, especially in areas related to reporting of carbon emissions, renewable energy, and/or water consumption.
- Ability to demonstrate sound judgment even in ambiguous situations
- Ability to work independently while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams
- Enthusiastic about sustainability
