Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Technical Lead

Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Technical Leader for our Transmission & Distribution discipline. You will provide technical leadership and oversight for the delivery of high‑voltage substation infrastructure projects, supporting a growing team and expanding portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as technical authority for primary and secondary substation engineering, providing strategic direction across projects.
  • Provide leadership for protection and control systems across HV substation projects.
  • Guide the design of HV/EHV primary systems, including AIS/GIS substations, equipment layouts, busbar schemes, and HV cable interfaces.
  • Oversee the development and review of critical deliverables: general arrangements, equipment layouts, specifications, busbar configurations, calculations, and conductor sizing.
  • Perform electrical clearances, insulation coordination, short‑circuit studies, lightning protection, shielding concepts, earthing and grounding system design, protection and control schematics, interlocking and control logic, relay configuration, functional design, protection coordination, and relay settings philosophy.
  • Provide guidance on integration of HV equipment, such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, instrument transformers, surge arresters, power transformers, and reactive compensation equipment.
  • Ensure integration of protection systems, SCADA interfaces, communication networks, and primary substation equipment.
  • Lead technical design reviews and assurance processes, ensuring alignment with project requirements and international standards.
  • Provide oversight across major infrastructure and substation programs, supporting project leadership in engineering strategy and delivery.
  • Coordinate between primary, secondary, civil, structural, system studies, and commissioning disciplines.
  • Act as senior technical interface with clients, contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders.
  • Support development of technical proposals, engineering strategies, and major bids.
  • Lead and develop engineers and specialists, mentor and provide technical guidance.
  • Promote a culture of technical excellence, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate resources across projects for efficiency and quality.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in electrical engineering.
  • Experience in HV primary substation engineering, protection, and control.
  • Demonstrated leadership in large transmission or distribution substation projects across all phases.
  • Governance experience across engineering teams.
  • Experience in major infrastructure programs and multidisciplinary delivery.

Preferred Experience

  • UK transmission or distribution substation experience.
  • National Grid standards knowledge.
  • EHV substation (220kV‑400kV) experience.
  • IEC 61850 substation automation experience.
  • Protection relay experience: ABB, GE, Siemens, or SEL.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent certification.
  • Construction, commissioning, or site engineering experience.
