The Role

We are seeking an experienced Underwriting Specialist to join our team in Milan, Italy. As a key member of our underwriting team, you will be responsible for conducting comprehensive risk assessments of prospective clients, analyzing financial statements, and identifying potential financial crime risks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Risk Assessments: Conduct thorough risk assessments of prospective clients, analyzing financial statements, reviewing KYC documentation, and identifying potential financial crime risks.
  • Application Assessments: Assess new customer applications and requests for additional products/services that increase potential risk or credit exposure, all within agreed SLAs.
  • Credit Evaluation: Evaluate the creditworthiness of prospective customers, considering factors such as financial strength, financial MI and cash flows, payment history, collateral, industry trends, and other non-financial factors.
  • KYC and KYB Verification: Perform Know Your Customer (KYC) and Know Your Business (KYB) verification steps, including identity verification, business verification, ownership verification, and compliance checks to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Acquiring Risks: Understand the underlying acquiring risks in a wide range of complex propositions across various clients, sectors, and product offerings.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Proactively engage with commercial teams and clients to maximize onboarding opportunities, manage case escalations, and advocate for the risk and underwriting function.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Compliance, Financial Crime, Legal, and other Risk teams, addressing high-risk applications, negotiating and reviewing bespoke contracts and security arrangements, and ensuring robust risk management practices across all functions.
  • Policy Development: Participate in creating, developing, and documenting policies and processes across the underwriting function, identifying areas for improvement and making recommendations for change.
  • Industry Trends: Stay informed on industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes that may impact the boarding journey or customer risk profiles.
Requirements
  • Experience: Proven experience in an underwriting or credit risk role within a financial institution, with strong financial analysis skills and a deep understanding of the Italian market.
  • Education: Degree-level education or equivalent experience in credit risk, underwriting, or a similar role within the financial services sector in the Italian market.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of Credit, Fraud, and AML risk specifically within the Payments Industry, including knowledge of card scheme rules, industry regulations, and the chargeback process.
  • Skills: Strong problem-solving, negotiation, decision-making, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating complex underwriting decisions to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Customer Focus: A customer-focused approach with the ability to balance risk management and customer satisfaction.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, focusing on continuous improvement and achieving shared goals.
  • Development: Motivation to grow and develop your skills with a passion for innovation and driving change within the payments industry.
  • Languages: Business fluency in English and Italian.
