Space Science Operations Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Science Operations Scientist to join our team at the European Space Agency (ESA). As a key member of our Science Operations Department, you will play a crucial role in overseeing the success of our space missions, from study to end of operations.
The Science Operations Department is responsible for developing and operating the science operation systems for our missions, as well as archiving and curating their data during operations and beyond. Our team is dedicated to maximising the scientific output of our missions for the benefit of humankind.
As a Science Operations Scientist, you will be assigned to the Gaia mission, working under the direct responsibility of the Mission Manager in the Mission Management and Science Operations Division. You will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the mission, from data collection to post-operations phase.
The Gaia mission has already achieved four highly successful data releases, and a fifth release is currently being prepared for publication in 2026. You will be part of a team that is committed to delivering high-quality legacy data products.

Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the operation of the Gaia mission, ensuring timely and accurate data collection and processing.
- Collaborate with the Mission Manager and other team members to develop and implement science operation systems.
- Archiving and curating data during operations and beyond.
- Contribute to the development of high-quality legacy data products.
Requirements:
- Master's degree in a relevant field, such as astrophysics, planetary science, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in scientific operations, with a strong background in space science.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
