Role Summary

We're seeking a highly skilled Senior Applied Scientist/Research SDE to join our Gray Systems Lab (GSL), an applied research group part of the Azure Data CTO office. As a member of our team, you'll work on novel technologies including analytics on GPUs, container technologies, graph databases, infrastructure and models for LLMs and data-science, machine learning for systems, and many other areas. You'll collaborate with researchers and engineers to build reliable, highly scalable and highly performing distributed systems for data analytics on Azure.

Responsibilities
  • Establish collaborative relationships with relevant product and business groups inside or outside of Microsoft and provide expertise or technology to create business impact.
  • Bring new technology and approaches into production by applying long-term research efforts to solve immediate product needs.
  • Independently work to create product impact by identifying approach, and applying, improving, or creating a research-backed solution to positively impact a Microsoft product or service.
  • Serve as an expert within product domain and gain deep knowledge in a complex or highly ambiguous service, platform, or domain.
  • Review business and product requirements and incorporate state-of-the-art research or previously tested solutions occurring at Microsoft and the academic field to formulate plans that will meet business goals.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND extensive related experience (e.g., statistics predictive analytics, research)OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)OR Doctorate in Computer Science, or Computer Engineering, or related field AND related experience (e.g., fault-tolerant distributed systems, modeling, research)
  • Extensive experience with one or more of the following languages: C#, Java, Python, C++, Rust.
  • Experience publishing academic papers as a lead author or essential contributor.
