**Descripción**:
The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education. ISGlobal has a broad portfolio in communicable and non-communicable diseases including environmental and climate determinants, and applies a multidisciplinary scientific approach ranging from the molecular to the population level. Research is organized in five programs: Climate, Air Pollution, Nature and Urban Health; Environment and Health over the Lifecourse; Global Viral and Bacterial Infections; Malaria and Neglected Parasitic Diseases and Maternal Child and Reproductive Health. ISGlobal is accredited with the Severo Ochoa distinction, a seal of excellence of the Spanish Science Ministry.
The overall goal of the Malaria Physiopathology and Genomics group at ISGlobal is to contribute to developing new tools for the control and eventual elimination of malaria through understanding key physio-pathological events of malaria in children and pregnant women. To this end, the team combines genomics, epidemiology, molecular biology, immunology, and clinical medicine to study parasite and host factors influencing malaria infections.

**What We Are Looking for**:
**TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE /QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Graduate in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biology or similar areas
- MSc in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biology or similar área
- PhD level will be an asset

**SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS**:
Required:

- 3 years of experience in genomics and lab-based research.
- Demonstrated experience in next-generation sequencing experimental design.
- Availability to travel to Mozambique and/or USA for research and/or training purposes.

Desired:

- Experience working in malaria and/or other infectious diseases.
- Experience in capacity-building & training of students and junior researchers
- Knowledge of R programming language and basic bioinformatic skills
- Drive project execution and implement a robust plan for measuring success.
- Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity,collaboration with others and independent thought.
- Ability to collaborate with the team and translate existing research into practical solutions and products

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Planning and overseeing of NGS routine in the malaria laboratory, in coordination with project coordinator.
- Management of laboratory files, databases and sequencing outputs.
- Execute NGS sequencing of malaria parasites.
- Contribute to capacity building of students and/or junior researchers at ISG and CISM Mozambique.

**SPECIFIC DUTIES**:

- Preparation of weekly workplans for NGS lab team.
- Write and/or review team’s experimental plans.
- Design and execute technical validations and/or experiements for optimization of lab procedures.
- Purify parasite genetic material from dried blood spots and rapid diagnostic tests, and perform quantitative analysis of malaria parasites using qPCR.
- Execute targeted NGS sequencing of malaria parasites.
- Contribute to writing of Standard Operating Procedures.
- Management of laboratory genomics database, NGS lab files, documentation, and genomic data output back ups.
- Management of GenMoz sample and DNA biobank at ISGlobal laboratory.
- Inventory of NGS materials and controls stock.
- Register of orders and expenses.
- Execute core pipeline and QC data analysis (results logbook, performance of the assay, results summaries, Experimental plan end form)
- Contribute to downstream analysis of genomic data in mutual agreement with project coordinator and PI (e.g. csp genetic diversity analysis)
- Support and advice CISM malaria laboratory in routine lab planning and NGS activities.
- Contribute to development of training materials, including organization of NGS workshops in Mozambique.
- Deliver NGS lab training to students/junior researchers at ISG lab.
- Contribute to mentoring of Master students in lab activities planning and data analysis.
- Participate in regular meetings with the team and project partners and share progress and results
- Interact with partners (CISM-Mozambique, UCSF-USA, Sanger-UK) for training and harmonization purposes.
- Contribute to Malaria Physiopathology & Genomics team’s dissemination activities (e.g. science outreach events, gender equity promotion posters)
- Travel to Mozambique for technical implementation and/or capacity building activities if required.
