Program Introduction

The Fellowship Program in Neuromuscular Diseases at Hospital del Mar, affiliated with Pompeu Fabra University and the Hospital del Mar Research Institute in Barcelona, Spain, ​​is designed for neurologists who wish to deepen their knowledge of the diagnosis, treatment, and comprehensive management of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and neuromuscular disorders. This program offers advanced training, based on national and international best practices and adhering to our institution's standards of excellence, with integrated clinical, academic, and research components.

Program Objectives

The program aims to provide comprehensive training in ALS and neuromuscular diseases, combining clinical activity, participation in clinical trials, and exposure to basic and translational research projects. Candidates will acquire the skills to:


• Make accurate diagnoses of diseases of the peripheral nerve, neuromuscular junction, muscle, and motor neuron.


• Management of pharmacological treatments, including immunotherapies, supportive therapies, and antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) in ALS and neuromuscular pathology.


• Participation in the indication and interpretation of neurophysiological studies.


• Integration into the multidisciplinary motor neuron disease team and collaboration in the comprehensive care of the patient.


• Active participation in clinical trials and clinical and basic research of the center, including access to projects related to in vitro cell models (e.g. patient's iPS derived neurons) and animal models (e.g. TDP-43 or C9ORF72 for ALS) in our laboratory.


• Development and enhancement of research capacity and completion of the doctoral program at the Pompeu Fabra university (opportunity to pursuit a doctoral thesis degree).

Program Description

During the program, the candidate will work in the ALS & Neuromuscular Diseases center of Hospital del Mar, which is part of the Neurology Department. This center is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of:


• Three neurologists and one clinical neurophysiologist specializing in neuromuscular pathology.


• Multidisciplinary team, including neuropsychological assessment, rehabilitation, pneumology, psychological therapy, nutritionist and other specialties, specializing in motor neuron disease.


• Team of clinical neurophysiologists for conducting neurophysiological studies and neuromodulation therapies (focused ultrasound).


• Nurse specializing in motor neuron diseases.


• Clinical trials clinical coordinator.


• In-house translational research laboratory team (cell and animal models), focused on RNA therapies for ALS.

Candidate Activities

  1. Clinical Care Training

The candidate will participate in the care of patients in the ALS & Neuromuscular Diseases center. This includes:

  • Weekly outpatient consultations.

  • Assessment of inpatients and emergency room patients.

  • Day care hospital (infusion center) for immunotherapies.

  • In patient's consultations.

  • Opportunity to participate in neurophysiological studies, under the direct supervision of the neurophysiology team.

  • Clinical Trials

  • Participation in active clinical trials with drugs and neuromodulation devices (phase 1b, 2 and 3) within the center, including recruitment, home visits, assessments, and document management.

  • Clinical and translational Research

  • Participation in clinical research projects (drugs, medical devices, biomarkers, phenotyping, registries, and observational studies).

  • Participation into translational research projects in the laboratory (cell models, animal models, RNA-based therapies).

  • Opportunity to apply to the Pompeu Fabra University doctoral program.

  • Academic Training and Sessions

  • Attendance and participation in clinical sessions within the department (journal clubs, educational training, clinical sesions, etc.).

  • Participation in the weekly meetings of the center and multidisciplinary meetings with the ALS team.

  • Conferences and Continuing Education

  • The program includes attendance at one national and one international conference per year, facilitating continuous professional development and knowledge exchange.

  • On-Call Duty

  • Opportunity to perform on-call neurology shifts depending on the candidate's profile and availability.

Employment Conditions

Contract Type: Employment contract as a specialist physician (Neurology).


• Working Hours: 40 hours per week


• Compensation: Salary commensurate with the specialist physician category, according to the current collective agreement.


• Duration: 3 years

Requirements for Candidates


• Valid Medical Degree in Spain


• Valid Specialist Degree in Neurology in the European Union
