JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Associate Dean will, in coordination with the VP of Operations / Dean, recruit qualified faculty and academic support staff, develop affiliations with clinical sites, collaborate with the Academic Quality Control Specialist to oversee the medical curriculum in Spain, and work collaboratively with the Vice President for Student Affairs to oversee student support services in Spain. The Senior Associate Dean of Medicine is responsible for ensuring the delivery of all pre-clinical and clinical education activities, overseeing appropriate faculty development to train the faculty to deliver the curriculum in all disciplines, and for monitoring the quality of the overall learning experience and learning environment of the students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend planning meetings, coordinate the selection of students, hiring the necessary faculty and staff for the School of Medicine, assist marketing personnel with information about the new school, onboarding of the faculty, preparation of the facilities to ensure there are the educational resources to be needed by the students (for example, laboratories, equipment, technology), coordinating, with the assistance of the office of student affairs, the orientation of the new students, and many others.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the students, faculty, and staff of the School of Medicine.
  • Oversee and manage the delivery of the pre-clinical and clinical curriculum which includes but is not limited to ensuring students have the appropriate learning experiences to achieve the educational objectives for all courses, clerkships, and required/elective rotations.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the faculty of the SPAIN campus is delivering the curriculum and providing opportunities for students to meet the course and clerkship objectives and in a learning environment that supports the needs of the students
  • Provide training and development activities for faculty and students as well as co-curricular activities that support the mission of the school in conjunction with the offices of medical education, faculty and clinical affairs, student affairs, career development, and the clinical departments of the school
  • Monitor school's performance and educational outcomes, making adjustments when necessary.
  • Monitor comparability of the education offered in the SPAIN campus and other campuses of the School of Medicine.
  • Oversight and management of student issues in collaboration with the Assistant Director for Student Affairs and the other members of the SPAIN team.
  • Enforce all policies and procedures including but not limited to student, faculty, and staff policies that pertain to the curriculum and school's accreditation standards.
  • Supervise SPAIN campus course and clerkship directors
  • Coordinate and monitor clinical educational experiences for campus students
  • Participate in the maintenance and monitoring of compliance with accreditation standards
  • Provide assistance in the annual creation of the budget for the campus (academic needs).
  • Ensure representation and participation of the SPAIN campus faculty in the curriculum committee.
  • Others as assigned by the President or VP of Operations / Dean.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

  • The ability to sustain communication with diverse groups, anticipate problems, reconcile conflicts, and maintain a strong philosophical base for the education of MD students.
  • Ability to take leadership role on the School of Medicine and work collaboratively with other campuses academic leadership.
  • Demonstrated ethical behavior, professionalism, interpersonal skills, leadership, and management abilities sufficient to direct the support staffeffectively.
  • Knowledge of current trends in medical education and medical practice as they relate to curricular aspects of the school.
  • Knowledge of current trends in outcomes assessment strategies, use of this knowledge to relate curricular aspects of the program to outcomes assessment.
  • Detailed working knowledge of accreditation standards as they relate to medical education.
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Knowledge of current trends in health care delivery

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • Must have a medical degree and be an engaged and respected clinical leader.
  • Outstanding ability to execute responsibilities of the job; demonstrated excellence and commitment to teaching students
  • Established leadership role, prefer prior experience working in undergraduate and graduate medical education
  • Experience in healthcare education and knowledge of trends in medical education
  • Demonstrated success in working well with faculty, administrators, and students in an educational environment

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS:

  • MD degree
  • Master or Certificate in Healthcare education, curriculum or similar areas
  • Business Degree is a plus.
  • Board-certified in specialty board
  • At least five years' experience in a medical education setting, including successful performance in a leadership role
  • Experience working with faculty, administrators, and students in an educational environment
  • Excellent communication skills. Bilingual English-Spanish preferred but not required.

  • Must live or establish residence in Spain.
