The Role

Healf is growing rapidly across Web, Frontend, Backend and AI. As we scale our multibrand wellbeing platform toward becoming a full health-tech company, we're looking for a hands-on Senior/Staff Engineer who wants to play a foundational role in shaping our engineering culture, systems, and product experience.

This is a rare opportunity to join an early-stage engineering team where your work will have immediate, visible impact. You'll build core systems, influence architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and set the standard for how we ship high-quality products at speed.

Important: This role is not for someone who wants to step away from coding and only manage engineers.

It's for someone who loves being hands-on, enjoys leading through technical direction, and wants to coach and uplift developing engineers as the business continues to unlock growth.

You'll partner closely with our Head of Engineering to define engineering strategy, while also shipping production code and guiding the wider team.

Location: Open to candidates based anywhere in the UK.

Where You'll Make ImpactTechnical Leadership & Architecture

• Shape system architecture, service boundaries, data flows, API contracts, ADRs, UI composition, and BFF patterns.

• Define engineering standards and patterns alongside the Head of Engineering.

• Evolve our API and event-driven designs to support scale, reliability, and future product lines.

• Break down complex problems and drive clear technical direction across the team.

Hands-On Engineering

• Ship Python/FastAPI microservices and TypeScript/React (ideally ) frontends.

• Build robust backend services, scalable APIs, and asynchronous workflows (Kafka, SNS/SQS, EventBridge).

• Use (Express/Fastify/NestJS) for BFFs or edge services where appropriate.

• Back systems with PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, ensuring performance and resilience.

• Contribute directly to AWS infrastructure through IaC (Pulumi/Terraform).

Team Leadership Through Mentorship

• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers — helping them grow quickly through pairing, reviews, and design guidance.

• Lead by example with strong engineering habits, clarity, and thoughtful trade-offs.

• Play a key role in fostering a high-performing, ambitious engineering culture.

Execution & Delivery

• Own major product features and technical initiatives end-to-end.

• Work with Product & Design to shape scope, surface trade-offs early, and maintain momentum.

• Unblock engineers quickly and drive aligned, steady progress across squads.

• Communicate clearly with technical and non-technical audiences.

Reliability, Observability & Governance

• Implement SLIs/SLOs and strengthen reliability practices.

• Integrate logs, metrics, tracing (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana, Datadog, Sentry).

• Add frontend observability (RUM, error tracking, Core Web Vitals).

• Champion AWS Well-Architected principles, least-privilege IAM, secure SDLC, and OWASP-aware web security.

• Support data privacy and governance requirements (e.g., GDPR).

Greenfield & Modernisation

• Build out new product domains (e.g. mobile backend, new wellbeing verticals, health-tech features).

• Modernise our existing systems (e.g. migration to App Router, typed APIs, performance optimisation).

• Ensure architecture scales with business ambitions.
  

What You'll BringBackend Depth

• Expert Python 3.x (FastAPI/Flask).

• Strong SQL fundamentals and Postgres optimisation.

• Experience with distributed patterns: sagas/outbox, idempotency, retries, circuit breakers.

• Strong testing discipline (pytest, integration tests, property-based testing).

Frontend Capability

• Strong TypeScript & React fundamentals.

• Experience with , component architecture, state/data fetching (TanStack Query).

• Good UI sensibility and Figma-friendly workflows.

• Solid understanding of performance (Lighthouse, Web Vitals) and SSR/SSG/ISR.

Experience

• Building BFFs/edge APIs with Express/Fastify/NestJS.

• API design (REST/JSON; GraphQL/gRPC/tRPC is a plus).

Cloud & Infrastructure

• Strong AWS knowledge (networking, compute, storage, IAM).

• Pulumi/Terraform, Docker, ECS/EKS or serverless where it fits.

• Understanding of observability systems and deployment pipelines (GitHub Actions/ArgoCD).

Leadership Through Craft

• You've led engineers before through technical authority, not by title.

• You enjoy mentoring and coaching developing engineers.

• You communicate clearly and make reasoned decisions.

• You bring calm, clarity, and direction during complexity.

• Tailwind, design systems (Storybook), React Hook Form/Zod

• GraphQL, tRPC, Prisma/SQLAlchemy

• WebSockets/WebRTC, background workers/cron orchestration

• Cost optimisation and performance profiling
