Breaking News Correspondent, Reuters

Reuters is looking for an energetic, talented self-starting reporter to join its Iberia Breaking News Hub in Madrid, covering mainly Spain for an international audience as well as contributing to our coverage of Portugal. Winning on breaking news - alerts followed by comprehensive updates - is at the heart of the core Reuters mission, and the Hubs are there to deliver this with accuracy and flair, using the latest news-gathering tools and media and working in lockstep with our visuals operation and liaison with specialist reporters.

The job spans all sorts of daily news, from corporate to politics and from macroeconomic indicators to general human interest or arts. Spain, the European Union’s fourth-largest economy, has it all in abundance, with many of these stories closely intertwined and requiring a keen eye to tell them right, be they the travails of a minority leftist government seeking to avoid new political crises in a fragmented parliament, separatism in Catalonia, the importance of tourism to the economy or the impact on some of Europe’s largest banks such as Santander and BBVA from all these factors.

Common responsibilities include monitoring live events, TV broadcasts and social media feeds; making calls to contacts and officials; snapping and building coverage in the first crucial minutes of a breaking news story and liaising with colleagues within the bureau and further afield.

To be our **Breaking News Correspondent, **you will likely have:

- A passion for news, an fair understanding of leading macroeconomic indicators and some knowledge of corporate activity and stock markets
- The ability to think clearly and write quickly
- News judgment to filter out PR speak or empty talk by politicians and dig out only important news that matters to international clients
- An aptitude for developing contacts
- A strong interest and expertise in monitoring local news outlets, including social media, spotting breaking news and human interest stories
- An eagerness to work as a team with text, TV and pictures colleagues in our bureau and across the region

To be our **Breaking News Correspondent, **you will likely have:

- An excellent command of written English, very good understanding of Spanish and ideally some Portuguese
- A degree in Journalism or at least two years of reporting experience - work experience with news agencies will be highly appreciated
- A level of comfort with handling figures and facts accurately and an ability to to be able to digest financial data
- The willingness and ability to work under tight deadlines and in various shift patterns
- Some understanding of or experience in visual journalism
- An eagerness to learn new skills and adapt to new tools and technology
