Gender Consultant

We are looking for a gender specialist to join our talented and committed social performance team in either the UK (Brighton), or Spain (Madrid).

Our clients include project developers, international lenders including multilateral development and private banks, and governments including donor and aid agencies. We provide support with delivering infrastructure and international development projects in emerging markets and lower income countries.
We want to expand our team’s gender capabilities and experience, and an important part of this role this role will be to support winning, delivery and development of specialist gender services including:

- Strategic advisory and action planning related to gender and development.
- Undertaking gender analysis and preparing gender action plans.
- Designing and overseeing surveys and investigations to gender action planning.
- Undertaking progress reporting on implementation of gender action plans.
- Conducting poverty, social, gender, and stakeholder analyses.
- Developing due diligence in accordance with international best practice to ensure quality-at-entry of gender mainstreaming during project preparation stage.
- Reviewing available reports and secondary data on relevant poverty, social, and gender issues.
- Developing gender sensitive strategies for infrastructure projects.
- In partnership with other specialists, planning and developing social surveys and contributing to stakeholder engagement and communications strategies.
- Conducting and/or assisting with interviews, focus group discussions, surveys, and/or participatory rapid assessments.
- Preparing participation strategies to increase awareness and mainstreaming of gender equality and social inclusion among communities and institutions.

The role is focussed mainly on projects in Europe, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. However, Mott MacDonald is a global business and we expect that this role will provide opportunities to support projects across global operations as needed.
Our team works mainly on international projects and therefore travel is an integral part of this role.

Essential:

- Master’s qualification in a discipline related to gender studies; gender and development; gender, equalities and social inclusion; international development or similar
- Experience in gender equality, empowerment and social inclusion
- Fluency in English, well-developed written (including report writing) and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex issues and concepts clearly, succinctly and with influence.
- Experience of working in the regions/countries mentioned above
- Ability to undertake international trips as required
- Strong sensitivity and commitment to safeguarding, diversity and inclusion.
- Excellent critical thinking and analytical ability

Desirable:

- Experience of IFC and other lender safeguards and their role in project finance processes and cycles
- Experience in providing development consultancy services
- Experience in gender auditing and action planning
- Experience in human rights and social impact assessment and management
- Fluency in French or Spanish
- Ability to work in other second languages
- Experience in writing proposals
- Experience in winning new work and managing client relationships
