Lead Backend Engineer

We are looking for a Lead Backend Engineer to work on a project in the education sector.

We are looking for someone with good communication skills, ideally with experience making decisions, proactive, a natural willingness to learn new technologies and who are keen to share their knowledge with others. The tech stack includes Ruby on Rails, Elm, Vue.JS and PostgreSQL.

**What you will do**:
As a Lead Backend Engineer at BridgeU, you will lead technical initiatives driven by both product and the engineering leadership team to build, improve and maintain the backend systems, while taking more junior members of the team on a journey with you. Knowing when to lead from the front, and when to lead from behind.

This pivotal role enables you to collaborate with accomplished Product Managers, Designers, Front, Back, Fullstack and Data Engineers, as well as Data Scientists within multidisciplinary Squads to drive the evolution of our product. You will also join the small but mighty Engineering Leadership Team and play a key role in driving the strategy and vision behind the platform. Most notably, the breaking up of the monolith.

In addition, you will:

- Spearhead the development of innovative features, enhancements, and maintenance for our product.
- Lead backend-focused technical and architectural discussions, shaping project direction and strategy.
- Foster cross-functional collaboration to assess new ideas and guarantee the successful execution of features.
- Mentor and empower team members, fostering an efficient and value-driven work environment.
- Effectively articulate and advocate for technical solutions to both the team and management.

**What you will bring:
- Experience of leading a Software Engineering Backend function.
- Knowledge of Python would be advantageous but not mandatory.
- Considerable experience with SQL databases including performance tuning and query optimisation.
- Considerable experience designing and maintaining performant systems
- Experience supporting junior / mid level engineers, and actively encouraging their growth.
- Ability to collaborate closely with our designers and product managers to move forward ambiguous projects with a pragmatic approach and excellent execution.
- Ability to communicate tech, in non-tech language, being able to take the business stakeholders on a journey and understand the what's and why’s of what we're doing or need to do.
