Laboratory Technician

The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education. **WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR**:
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Provide technical support to two research groups focused on malaria research, ensuring smooth laboratory operations and coordination.
- Perform laboratory tasks such as sample preparation, cellular, parasite culture and molecular biology techniques (PCR, western blotting, DNA/RNA extraction, etc.).
- Assist in the design and execution of experiments, ensuring data accuracy and quality.
- Manage and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring it is in good working condition.
- Keep detailed records of experiments, observations, and results in accordance with laboratory protocols.
- Ensure laboratory safety standards are met and all procedures follow ethical guidelines.
- Assist in preparing materials for publications, reports, and presentations.
- Contribute to the development and optimization of new laboratory techniques.

**SPECIFIC DUTIES**:

- Support experimental setups and manage tasks across two research groups to ensure smooth operations.
- Maintain cells, Plasmodium falciparum and other parasites/pathogens cultures, ensuring optimal growth and experimental conditions.
- Perform molecular biology techniques such PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA/RNA/proteins extraction, and western blotting for data collection. Generation of plasmids (cloning), including use of the CRISPR-Cas9 system.
- Organize, document and maintain accurate experimental data in accordance with protocols.
- Regularly maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment to ensure proper functioning and reliability.
- Adhere to and enforce safety protocols.
- Assist in the preparation of research papers, reports, and presentations.
- Contribute to the optimization of new experimental methods and protocols.

**TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Graduate in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biology or related field (Master’s or equivalent experience preferred).
- Proven experience in basic laboratory techniques especially in Plasmodium falciparum cultures and molecular biology.
- Previous experience in malaria or infectious disease research is a plus.

**SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS**:

- Proficiency in Plasmodium falciparum culturing techniques.
- Strong background in molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR, western blotting).
- Experience with cell culture techniques, microscopy (light and fluorescence microscopy) and flow cytometry.
- Familiarity with biochemical assays and protein analysis.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and good laboratory practices (GLP).
- Ability to manage and organize laboratory equipment.
- Good record-keeping skills with the ability to document experiments accurately.
- Ability to analyze experimental data using relevant software (e.g., Excel, GraphPad).
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks.

**LANGUAGE LEVEL**:

- Proficiency in Catalan, English, and Spanish.
