POSITION TITLE: Middle/Upper School Orchestra Teacher POSITION OVERVIEW:ASM is seeking a dynamic, collaborative, and globally-minded Middle/Upper School Orchestra teacher to further support and develop its instrumental music program. The successful candidate will inspire students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and support their musical, social, and academic growth through a concept-driven, inquiry-based approach to music education. The teacher will work collaboratively within a K–12 music program and contribute to a school community that values and supports a comprehensive approach to music education. Candidates must demonstrate flexibility to teach classes in other areas as needed, including exploratory courses, in support of the school's overall academic program. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach Middle and Upper School Orchestra classes, including beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, as assignedImplement a vertically aligned orchestra curriculum that emphasizes conceptual understanding, technical skill development, and student agencyFoster musicianship, ensemble collaboration, technique, and music literacy in a culturally responsive learning environment Organize instrument inventory, be able to make minor adjustments throughout the school year, and arrange repair and maintenance as needed with the local luthier. Plan learning experiences that promote inquiry, reflection, creativity, and authentic performance opportunitiesPrepare students for concerts, assemblies, and community events, including evening performancesCollaborate closely with K–12 music colleagues to ensure continuity, alignment, and shared vision across the instrumental and general music programsServe as an advisor to a group of Middle or Upper School students, supporting academic growth and social-emotional well-beingWork collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines to support interdisciplinary learning and shared approaches to assessment and reflection, and a willingness to share classroom spacesDemonstrate flexibility and willingness to teach in other areas, including exploratory classes, based on student enrollment and programmatic needsContribute actively to curriculum development, assessment design, and ongoing program review PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS: Teacher certification and/or degree in Music Education or a related field, with specialization in instrumental music (strings/orchestra preferred)Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience, preferably in Middle and/or Upper School settingsExperience teaching students from diverse cultural, linguistic, and educational backgroundsStrong background in string instruction, capable of instructing all string instrumentsExperience designing learning experiences that integrate inquiry, conceptual understanding, and skill-based outcomesExperience with performance-based assessment and the use of clear criteria to support student reflection and growthFamiliarity with collaborative, student-centered, and project-based learning approachesEffective use of technology to support instruction, assessment, and creative expressionExperience working with English Language Learners and students with diverse learning needsWillingness to serve as a student advisor and participate fully in the life of an international school communityStrong communication skills, reflective practice, and a commitment to continuous professional learning ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Working hours: 8:45 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.Vacation and time off in accordance with the published annual school calendarCompetitive salary and benefits package offered in alignment with the policies of the Board of Trustees
