Project Overview

In the pursuit of a carbon-neutral future, municipal wastewater treatment plants must undergo a significant transformation. Our goal is to develop a process that converts most organic pollution into energy, rather than losing it to the air through oxidation.

To achieve this, we will be using a digester that produces energy, rather than an aerobic bioreactor that oxidizes COD. This digester will be operated with a concentrated feed, requiring the wastewater treatment plant of the future to start with the concentration or harvesting of COD for the digester.

Two promising processes have been identified for this concentration step. Your task will be to compare a high-loaded bioreactor to a fine sieve and determine the best solution for concentrating COD.

Key parameters to consider in this comparison include removal efficiency, costs, floc stability, biogas production, and carbon footprint.

Responsibilities
  • Perform laboratory experiments to compare the two concentration methods
  • Make a comparison based on experimental results, previous pilot results, and theoretical calculations
  • Provide a recommendation based on your final evaluation
Requirements
  • BSc or MSc in Chemical, (Bio)Process, Civil, or Environmental Engineering
  • Flexibility and independence
  • Curiosity and analytical skills
  • Professional command of the English language in writing
  • Desirable: command of the Dutch language
