Position Overview

The Single Cell and Synthetic Genomics of Blood Formation laboratory at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona is seeking a dedicated PhD candidate with a robust background in computational biology and bioinformatics. The selected individual will spearhead a project focused on the clonal dynamics of blood formation, particularly in the context of aging and hematological disorders.

Research Significance

Blood formation is a vital and intricate process of cellular differentiation with significant biomedical implications. Our research group investigates adult hematopoiesis through advanced computational biology techniques, single cell genomics, and genetic screening methodologies. Understanding the clonal behavior of blood stem cells is crucial, as these cells exhibit distinct epigenetic and functional characteristics, influencing their ability to generate various blood cell types.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Collaborate with an experienced technician and clinical partners to develop and implement the research project.
  • Analyze data derived from innovative single cell DNA methylome methodologies.
  • Engage with fellow bioinformaticians to enhance the EPI-Clone method and related clonal tracking techniques.
  • Work closely with both experimental and computational scientists within the team.

About the Research Team

Our interdisciplinary team focuses on the biology of hematopoietic stem cells, employing a combination of single cell genomics, genetic screens, and computational approaches. We aim to create novel genomic and bioinformatics tools to address critical questions in the field, particularly regarding gene regulation in healthy hematopoiesis and clonal functionality in aging and disease contexts.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., computational biology, genomics, biomedicine, bioinformatics).
  • A strong interest in single cell genomics technologies and stem cell biology.
  • Research experience in computational biology, with a minimum of six months dedicated to a single project.
  • Outstanding academic performance in quantitative subjects (mathematics, physics, etc.).
  • Proficient programming skills in R or Python.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in experimental techniques (e.g., cloning, library preparation, qPCR).
  • A solid foundation in machine learning and statistical analysis.

Language Proficiency

Fluency in English is required.

Technical Skills

  • Data analysis capabilities.
  • Proficiency in R and Python programming.
