About the Role

Orbital Paradigm is seeking a highly skilled Embedded Systems Engineer to join our team in the development of our small space return vehicle, Kestrel. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing the onboard software architecture for Kestrel.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop flight software prototypes to meet evolving spacecraft requirements, ensuring flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
  • Integrate software with prototype spacecraft hardware, performing iterative testing and refinement to achieve reliable system performance.
  • Define and develop the overall software architecture, ensuring a scalable, modular, and maintainable structure that supports current and future mission requirements.
  • Design, implement, and test communication protocols for data exchange between spacecraft components, ensuring reliable and efficient transmission in space environments.
  • Optimize software for real-time performance, ensuring timely and accurate execution of flight control algorithms and data handling processes critical for mission success.
Requirements
  • Experience developing embedded software in any C-family language.
  • Good understanding of software design and testing lifecycle for space projects.
  • Experience in software architecture definition and requirements definition.
  • Knowledge of real-time operating systems (such as RTEMS or FreeRTOS) and/or operating systems targeted for embedded applications (such as any embedded Linux).
  • Knowledge of typical embedded communication interfaces such as USART, SPI, I2C.
  • Knowledge of space systems engineering and relevant industry standards.
Desired Skills
  • Experience with space systems design and development.
  • Strong understanding of embedded systems, including real-time operating systems (RTOS), microcontrollers, and FPGA programming.
  • Familiarity with OBDH and TMTC architectures used in space systems.
  • Skills in software testing methodologies, debugging tools, and techniques, including unit testing, integration testing, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles and practices.
Professional Experience and Academic Background
  • Master's degree in Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in software and embedded software design, preferably in the aerospace or space industry.
  • Proven track record of successful project contributions from concept through to production.
