The Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are at the forefront of quantum hardware, enabling advancements in quantum information, computation, and metrology. The rapid evolution of technologies that harness quantum properties is set to revolutionize various sectors, paving the way for groundbreaking applications. This PhD project offers the candidate a unique opportunity to engage in innovative research and development, acquiring comprehensive skills in quantum technology, optics, photonics, CMOS technology, nano-fabrication, and multiphysics simulation.
Candidate Profile
We seek an individual with a strong foundation in Experimental Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline, particularly with experience in condensed matter physics, optics, photonics, or microelectronics. Familiarity with electronics and programming is advantageous. The candidate must possess the physical capability to operate in a laboratory setting and demonstrate excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Enhancement of a quantum diamond microscope (QDM).
- Characterization of magnetic sensing/imaging using continuous wave (CW) and pulsed Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR) techniques, focusing on sensitivity optimization.
- Design and development of NV-CMOS integrated quantum sensors, including on-chip initialization and readout for ODMR.
- Presentation of research findings at international conferences, alongside the preparation of technical documentation and scientific publications.
- Compilation of a PhD thesis encapsulating the research outcomes.
Work Environment
The candidate will collaborate within a vibrant, multidisciplinary team of physicists and engineers at Gradiant, with opportunities for research exchanges at esteemed university groups specializing in Quantum Photonics. This role is designed to culminate in the attainment of a Doctorate.
What We Expect from You
- A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Nanotechnology, Electronics, or related fields.
- A strong motivation to innovate integrated quantum technologies utilizing point defects in diamond for practical applications.
- A solid understanding of condensed matter physics; prior experience in quantum sensing, integrated photonics, or CMOS technology is a plus.
- Laboratory experience with optical systems is desirable.
- High levels of commitment and the ability to work independently.
- Willingness to collaborate closely with a team of quantum physicists and engineers.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work effectively in a team setting.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
