Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Science Operations Specialist to join our team at the European Space Agency. As a key member of our Science Operations Department, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of our space missions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate Science Ground Segment Systems: You will be responsible for coordinating the operations of our Science Ground Segment systems to maximize the scientific return of our missions.
  • Interface with Mission Operations Centers: You will work closely with other mission operations centers and affiliated scientific institutes to ensure seamless communication and collaboration.
  • Lead Data Processing Centre: You will assume the role of leader of our Data Processing Centre at ESAC, including reporting duties to relevant mission stakeholders.
  • Support Scientific Content Definition: You will support the definition of the scientific contents of our data releases and the data sets and services to be preserved for the legacy phase of our missions.
  • Collaborate with Project Scientist and Mission Manager: You will work closely with our Project Scientist and Mission Manager to analyze the impact of mission baseline changes on the scientific outcome of our missions.
  • Interface with Payload Experts: You will act as an interface between our Science Operations Centre and the mission consortium's payload experts for instrument calibration, instrument performance, and operational knowledge preservation.
  • Coordinate Payload Calibration and Analysis Software: You will coordinate activities relating to on-ground payload calibration and the provision of scientific analysis software for the legacy phase of our missions.
  • Define Activities for Science Operations Service Contractor Workforce: You will define the activities to be carried out by our Science Operations service contractor workforce supporting our missions.
  • Plan and Coordinate Transition to Legacy Phase: You will plan and coordinate all activities relating to the transition from the post-operations phase to the legacy phase of our missions.
  • Compile Lessons Learned: You will compile 'Lessons Learned from Gaia' and contribute to corresponding initiatives at divisional and departmental level.
Requirements
  • Active Researcher in Space Science: You must be an active researcher in a relevant field of space science.
  • Experience in Coordinating Stakeholders: You must have experience in coordinating internal or external stakeholders on scientific projects.
  • Experience in Scientific Data Processing: You must have experience in scientific data processing, preferably in space science or a related field.
  • Programming Skills: You must be proficient in the Java and/or Python programming languages.
  • PhD in Astronomy or Physics: You must hold a PhD in astronomy or physics.
Additional Requirements
  • Experience in Science Operations: Experience in science operations in the context of astronomical survey missions would be an asset.
  • Experience with Media and Outreach Activities: Experience with media and outreach activities would also be an asset.
