Overview and Purpose Are you enthusiastic about cutting-edge technology, Linux systems, and high-performance computing? The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is on the lookout for a skilled professional to join our Operations Department as a High-Performance Computing User Support Specialist.

Supercomputers play a crucial role in addressing the most demanding scientific and technological challenges through advanced simulations. This role will be part of the operations department within the High-level support team. The team will focus on application support for significant projects utilizing BSC resources, including enhancing the scalability and performance of key European scientific applications and tools aimed at Exascale, Data Analytics, and Machine Learning, as well as code optimization.

BSC is set to host one of Europe's largest supercomputers as part of the EUROHPC joint undertaking. The pre-exascale system at BSC will be known as MareNostrum 5, boasting over 205 PFlops sustained performance, and the HPC support team will play a vital role in maximizing the utilization of this machine.

Key Responsibilities
  • Optimize and adapt scientific application codes for new pre-exascale architectures.
  • Enhance the performance of existing parallel codes, improving serial efficiency and scalability, modifying the code as necessary or assisting developers with required changes.
  • Conduct performance analysis and benchmarking for selected applications, reporting findings to application developers.
  • Collaborate with various functional groups at both European and International levels on technical matters related to scientific application support.
Qualifications
  • Education
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Essential Knowledge and Experience
    • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a similar role working with HPC codes.
    • Proficiency in using performance analysis tools and parallel debuggers.
    • Experience in supporting and collaborating with external partners.
    • Familiarity with parallel programming models (MPI, OpenMP, etc.).
    • Strong understanding of the Linux environment and Shell scripting.
  • Additional Knowledge and Experience
    • Experience managing large collaborative projects and familiarity with version control systems like git and SVN.
    • Knowledge of BSC performance tools.
    • Experience in analyzing and testing various high-performance computing architectures.
    • Proficient in English.

Employment Conditions
  • The position is based at BSC within the Operations Department.
