Senior Engineer for Atmospheric Quality Research

The Earth Sciences Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, under the guidance of Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes, is dedicated to enhancing the understanding and prediction of atmospheric pollutants and their impacts on air quality, climate, and weather patterns.
The Atmospheric Composition (AC) group plays a crucial role in various forecasting initiatives. The dust component of the MONARCH model operates at the Barcelona Dust Forecast Center (BDFC), recognized as the first WMO Regional Specialized Meteorological Center for Atmospheric Sand and Dust Forecasting. This model contributes to multi-model ensemble forecasts for the WMO Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System Regional Center (WMO SDS-WAS RC) covering Northern Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, in collaboration with the International Cooperative for Aerosol Prediction (ICAP). Both centers are co-hosted by BSC and the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
Additionally, the group is responsible for the CALIOPE air quality system, which delivers high-resolution air quality forecasts across Europe and Spain, utilizing the in-house emission model HERMES. The transition of CALIOPE to the MONARCH system is currently underway.
The Earth Sciences Department is seeking a developer to contribute to the ongoing development of the operational air quality forecasting system (AQFS) and to maintain the existing CALIOPE system. This role will involve supporting advancements in the system, transitioning to Mare Nostrum 4, and engaging with cutting-edge technologies. The selected candidate will be part of the Computational Earth Sciences group, collaborating with various IT professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement, execute, and monitor Dust Forecast Systems (SDS-WAS, BDFC) within a High-Performance Computing environment.
- Assist in the development of operational systems and evaluation tools for Dust and Air Quality forecasting applications, considering user needs and operational limitations.
- Collaborate with members of the Atmospheric Composition and Earth Services Groups.
- Maintain existing User Interactive Dashboards and develop new features.
- Enhance current visualization tools for effective display of extensive spatio-temporal datasets.
- Monitor the performance of forecasting suites and address issues as they arise, utilizing operational tools and internal expertise.
- Support the team with additional tasks related to operational production systems and data management.
- Contribute to the documentation and training of users for both test and production suites related to forecasting applications.
- Co-lead the "Data and Diagnostics" team, managing tasks and deliverables while supervising team members, reporting to the group leader of Computational Earth Sciences.
- Education
- Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- Essential Skills and Experience
- Proficient in programming, particularly in R and Python.
- Experience with operational Air Quality Forecast Systems and a broad range of Observational Databases in a Big Data context is highly valued.
- Strong understanding of data dissemination technologies (THREDDS, ESGF, Cloud).
- Solid skills in a Linux environment (shell, build, configure...). Experience with HPC is a plus.
- Proficient in English, both written and spoken.
- Familiarity with Earth Sciences file formats (NetCDF, GRIB, HFD...), GeoJSON, and tools (CDO, NCO...) for managing large datasets.
