At the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, we are seeking a highly skilled Research Engineer to join our team in the Earth Sciences Department. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and maintenance of our operational air quality forecasting systems, including the dust component of the MONARCH model and the CALIOPE air quality system.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and execute dust forecast systems in a high-performance computing environment.
- Contribute to the development of operational systems and evaluation tools for dust and air quality forecast applications.
- Interact with members from the Atmospheric Composition and Earth Services Groups.
- Maintain current and future user interactive dashboards and develop new features.
- Further develop current visualization tools for efficient display of large datasets.
- Monitor progress and performance of suites and solve problems as they arise.
- Support the team in other tasks related to operational production systems and observational data-downloading/formatting.
- Contribute to documentation and training of users of test and production suites for forecast applications.
Requirements
- Computer Science Degree or similar.
- Excellent experience in programming, especially in R and Python.
- Proven experience in operational air quality forecast systems and observational databases in the context of Big Data.
- Excellent knowledge of data dissemination technologies, THREDDS, ESGF, and Cloud.
- Strong skills in Linux environment and HPC skills.
- Fluent English, both written and spoken.
- Proven experience in Earth Sciences file types, GeoJSON, and managing large volumes of data.
Conditions
- The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department.
- We offer a full-time contract, a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, an extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, and support to relocation procedures.
- Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration.
- Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement.
- Salary: We offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona.
