PhD Opportunities at ICFO

ICFO is a leading research institution in the field of photonics and quantum sciences. We offer a limited number of PhD positions to well-qualified applicants who wish to obtain a doctoral degree in any of our research topics.

Research Areas
  • Atto-Science and Ultrafast Optics: Explore the behavior of matter at the attosecond scale and develop new ultrafast optical techniques.
  • Photovoltaics and Thermal Photonics: Investigate new materials and devices for efficient energy conversion and thermal management.
  • Optical Sensing and Optoelectronics: Design and develop novel optical sensors and optoelectronic devices for various applications.
  • NanoPhotonics and NanoMechanics: Study the interaction between light and matter at the nanoscale and develop new nanophotonic and nanomechanical systems.
  • Ultracold Quantum Gases: Investigate the behavior of ultracold quantum gases and develop new techniques for quantum simulation and control.
  • Quantum and Low-Dimensional Materials: Explore the properties of quantum and low-dimensional materials and develop new devices and applications.
  • Quantum Communications and Sensing: Develop new quantum communication and sensing technologies for secure data transmission and precise measurement.
  • Quantum Optics and Quantum Information: Investigate the behavior of quantum systems and develop new quantum information processing technologies.
  • Nanophotonics and Condensed Matter Physics: Study the interaction between light and matter at the nanoscale and develop new nanophotonic and condensed matter systems.
  • Biophysics and Biophotonics: Investigate the behavior of biological systems and develop new biophotonic and biomedical technologies.

As a PhD student at ICFO, you will be part of a dynamic and international research community. Eligibility and Application
  • Master-equivalent degree: You must have an internationally-recognized Master-equivalent degree in a field related to ICFO's research activities.
  • Excellent academic record: You must have an excellent academic record, previous research experience, and a strong commitment to scientific research.
  • English language proficiency: You must have a high working knowledge of English.
