In recent years, batteries have emerged as crucial components in the decarbonization of various sectors, including transportation and industry, due to their longevity, high energy density, and remarkable power density. However, internal and external faults, along with charge and discharge cycles, can diminish battery performance and pose serious safety risks, such as thermal runaway. Consequently, the development of precise and high-fidelity numerical models is vital for thoroughly investigating and comprehending the intricate processes involved, particularly those related to thermal runaway.
This Post-Doctoral role presents an opportunity to engage in a research initiative led by the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) aimed at furthering advancements in battery technology and contributing to the evolution of sustainable energy solutions. VTT is a leading Finnish research organization focused on creating technological innovations for a sustainable future in energy systems. The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) will contribute to this project by conducting high-fidelity simulations to gain deeper insights into the complex coupled multiphysics phenomena of battery cells and systems. The numerical findings will inform the design of prototypes and enhance safety through rigorous testing.
The successful candidate will collaborate with a team of seasoned researchers from the Propulsion Technologies Group within the CASE Department at BSC. This multidisciplinary team comprises experts from various fields with a robust background in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and advanced software development utilizing High-Performance Computing (HPC). The researcher will be tasked with creating an efficient HPC-based computational framework to investigate the thermo-electro-chemical processes within battery cells and systems, utilizing the Alya code developed at BSC. Alya encompasses numerous essential physical models, including Navier-Stokes equations, heat transfer models, and multi-component reactive scalar transport. The model crafted by the candidate will undergo verification and validation against experimental data collected from prototypes provided by state-of-the-art equipment from project partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop a high-fidelity thermo-electro-chemical model of batteries using HPC technologies.
- Integrate this thermo-electro-chemical model with a fluid dynamics solver.
- Conduct multiple high-fidelity simulations to evaluate safety aspects.
- Participate in project meetings.
- Validate numerical outcomes with experimental data.
- Collaborate with other BSC researchers and project partners.
- Education
- Candidates should possess a degree in Aerospace, Civil Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or related fields.
- Essential Knowledge and Experience
- A solid understanding of fluid mechanics, chemistry, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and numerical methods is expected.
- Proficiency in any programming language.
- Additional Knowledge and Experience
- Experience in parallel programming for HPC is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Skills

Employment Conditions
