Climate variability impacts nearly all natural hazards and changing hydrological cycles with an increase in number and intensity of extreme precipitation events that ultimately increase the risk of flooding and its impacts. Climate change has challenged the insurance sector like never before

We cannot stop natural hazards. But we can help prevent them from becoming disasters.

**Who we are**

Mitiga is a spinoff of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, which hosts MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe.

**Who you are**

Reporting directly to our Risk & Partnership Lead, you will act as the scientific lead for climate, extreme weather and risk science. Utilizing your CAT modeling experience and in-depth (re)Insurance market knowledge, you will manage and mentor a small team of atmospheric, climate scientists and numerical weather prediction experts. Ideally, you will have worked with a variety of real-time meteorological data spanning from global to dynamically downscaled datasets in various formats.
- You’re also well versed in extreme weather /High impact weather modelling, being able to identify those processes, evaluate them, and prepare the modelling process flows to predict them making use of state-of-the-art models and data assimilation techniques.
- You back up that knowledge with a Ph.D. degree in the atmospheric sciences, applied mathematics/statistics, computer science, or a closely related field. Alternatively, you have complemented your master's degree with long track proven experience. Some experience with the private sector would be a great asset.
- You will lead the development and implementation of catastrophe risk modelling solutions for the humanitarian and insurance sectors to enhance societal resilience to natural hazards and mitigate climate change impacts.
- You have advanced knowledge in meteorology modelling, in particular dynamical downscaling of precipitation events leading to potential flooding events with usage of observation data (rain gauges, radar) to nudge the model to reality through state-of-the-art data assimilation techniques.
- You will contribute to the study of climate processes (including future climate projections) and their impact on regional and local weather patterns and extremes at different time scales
- You will be involved in high-profile partnerships, helping disrupt the traditional modus operandi of insurance and humanitarian industries so strong communication skills and an ability to communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences is a must.
