Context And Mission   We are particularly interested in this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research.
We seek a passionate and talented Atmospheric scientist and NWP specialist to join our team. In this role, you’ll have the chance to apply your amazing skills and experience to extreme weather forecasting and early warning products. We look for someone who is a quick and willing learner, and who is not afraid to get involved and form part of a close-knit team.   Key Duties  
  • To be specialized in numerical weather prediction and extreme weather modelling with a focus on severe convective hazards.
  • To contribute to the study of climate processes and their impact on regional and local weather patterns and extremes at different time scales.
  • To collaborate with other scientists and software developers, business analysts and software architects to plan, design, develop, test, and maintain software products and services.
  • To contribute to the development and implementation of catastrophe risk modelling solutions for the humanitarian and insurance sectors to enhance societal resilience to natural hazards and mitigate climate change impacts.
  Requirements  
  • Education
    • To have a degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, atmospheric physics and dynamics or any other related field.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Proven track record in the study of severe convective systems and related hazards.
    • Expert in numerical weather prediction.
    • Experience or strong interest in AI/ML tools and their application to extreme weather modelling and forecast
    • Experience in statistical downscaling for the definition of regional distribution and time evolution of small-scale features given large-scale coarse resolution analyses, forecasts, or simulations
  • Competences
    • Deals well with ambiguity.
    • Approaches the job with a focus on providing excellent research focused on applied science.
    • Ability to take ownership of and work independently to manage projects through to completion.
    • Very strong analytical and organizational skills.
    • Detail orientation, thoroughness, reliability, and ability to prioritize are required.
    • Proficiency in English is a must. Good handling of Spanish is required.
  Conditions  
  • The position will be located at BSC within the CASE Department
  • We offer a full-time contract a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
