- ALBA is the Spanish synchrotron light source, a large research infrastructure operating ten beamlines, complementary facilities, and an Electron Microscopy Center, this last in partnership with other institutions. Currently constructing multiple more beamlines, expanding the Electron Microscopy Center, and integrating advanced data analytics, it sums up a wide range of infrastructures geared toward finding solutions to societal challenges.
Located in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain), it is funded by the Spanish Government (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación) and the Catalan Government (Generalitat de Catalunya, Departament de Recerca i Universitats). The synchrotron light produced by 3 GeV electrons is used by thousands of researchers to analyse and understand the properties and functionality of matter, spanning a wide variety of fields, such as catalytic research, health, energy production/storage, environmental research, communication technologies, or cultural heritage.

XAIRA, the new microfocus Macromolecular Crystallography (MX), is one of the beamlines in construction. First experiments are foreseen by the end of 2023. XAIRA
will deliver an X-ray beam of ~1 μm spot size at the sample, which can be enclosed in a He atmosphere. The beamline aims at providing the best conditions for challenging techniques in macromolecular crystallography (MX) such as low diffracting micronsized oscillation experiments, elemental determination and native phasing at long wavelengths and fixed-target serial crystallography. Other scientific cases such as timeresolved MX experiments will be included in the capabilities of the beamline in the future. XAIRA is complementary with another MX beamline, XALOC, operating since 2012 and being currently upgraded.
We are offering a BL scientist position within the XAIRA beamline group to develop the beamline capabilities, support the user program and develop research projects along the lines of the Life Sciences section. Once in operation, the staff of the two ALBA MX beamlines will share common services and collaborate to offer a wide user scientific program. You will work in projects, together with scientists, engineers and external collaborators aiming at the automatization of the beamline operation, data acquisition, automatic processing, bioinformatics and/or new scientific methods and instrumentation. This position will be of interest for enthusiastic scientists holding a degree in structural biology, computational biology, bioinformatics or related disciplines.

- TasksYour tasks will be:
- Design, develop, commission and maintain the instrumentation required to implement advanced MX methods at the beamline so that can be offered to the scientific and industrial user community.
- Provide support to the scientific and industrial users in ALBA MX beamlines (XAIRA and XALOC) as a Local Contact.
- Participate in the development of the data acquisition, storage, processing, analysis and visualization systems of the MX beamlines. This may involve from general
specification of the beamline control system and data pipelines to actual Python coding.
- Develop the scientific program in macromolecular structural biology, expanding the capabilities of XAIRA and other instruments and techniques.
- Develop your own scientific program on structural biology, advanced MX methods, bioinformatics or computational biology, aligned with the scientific program of the beamline and, in the larger context, of the Life Sciences section.
- Engage in the beamline research program of the MX group, national and European projects and collaborations. This may also include the initiation of new projects if appropriate.
To successfully develop the tasks, you will work with a team of ALBA experts and external collaborators to build up and test instrumentation on advanced techniques in MX experiments such as fixed-target serial crystallography, elemental determination and native phasing at long wavelengths or time-resolved MX experiments using different setups.
