The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and is a founding member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE. Context And Mission

The Language Technologies Unit at BSC has consolidated experience in several NLP areas, such as massive language model building, biomedical text mining, machine translation, and unsupervised learning for under-resourced languages. It has been entrusted by the Spanish and Catalan governments to develop fundamental open-source resources and technologies for Spanish and Catalan. The LT Unit is looking for a Deep Learning Project Engineer with experience in Language Technologies, specifically in Deep Learning and model building for tasks such as deployment, fine-tuning, and evaluation of LLMs in downstream tasks.
The successful candidate will work in a highly sophisticated HPC environment and establish collaborations with experts in different areas both locally and internationally.

Key Duties

Actively participate in designing proposals, project scoping, and evaluation procedures for natural language applications based on user requirements.
Utilize technical skills to enhance application natural language capabilities through integrations and additional coding.
Plan, design, and implement evaluations of natural language platforms to assess capabilities and determine development options.
Write project deliverables in English, collaborating closely with software developers.
Monitor and evaluate user feedback and identify improvement actions.
Design and develop PoC and prototypes.

Requirements

Education: PhD in computer sciences, engineering, computational linguistics, or equivalent.
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience:

Experience in project management tasks: scoping, planning, time-management, and deliverable writing.
Participation in international projects, preferably European FP projects.
Experience with Machine Learning and language processing platforms (e.g., GATE, UIMA, Huggingface, Spacy, Pytorch, Tensorflow).
Experience in integrating and evaluating NLP tools for unstructured information exploitation.
Experience in language technologies related to data models and metadata schema.
Experience in language technologies related to standard data formats and text annotation formats.

Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience:

Strong understanding of linguistic concepts related to morphosyntax, syntax, and semantics.
Familiarity with statistical methods in natural language analysis and machine learning.
Strong programming skills in Python, and in at least one of the following: Java or C++.
Strong linguistic background in annotation and development of language resources.
Fluency in spoken and written English; good understanding of Catalan and Spanish; fluency in other European languages is valued.

Competences:

Good communication skills.
Ability to work in a team and a multi-cultural environment.

Conditions

Location: BSC within the Life Sciences Department.
Full-time contract (37.5h/week), good working environment, flexible hours, training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, relocation support.
Duration: Open-ended contract linked to the project and budget duration.
Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus December 24th and 31st.
Salary: Competitive salary based on qualifications and experience.
Starting date: ASAP.
