The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies to facilitate scientific progress. Context And Mission
The applicant will develop new ideas in the field of computational seismology, enabling state-of-the-art seismic hazard, risk, and monitoring algorithms with the help of artificial intelligence and supercomputers. The applicant will collaborate in projects DT-GEO, GEO-INQUIRE, KOIOS, and ChEESE-2p towards next-generation information systems for seismology.
Key Duties
Develop new ideas in the form of operational prototypes for modelling-based seismic risk assessment.
Integrate solutions within existing technical solutions, both developed internally at BSC or together with its international collaborators.
Advance the state-of-the-art in computational seismology through excellent research.
Requirements
Education
PhD in natural sciences topics, related to earthquakes.
BSc in sciences (physics, geophysics, mathematics...).
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
3 years of experience in seismology or geophysics.
3 years of experience in applications based on simulations in high-performance computers.
A remarkable scientific track record with at least three high-profile publications in the field.
Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
Required: programming skills in Python, and some other language.
Desired: experience in running distributed computing simulations.
Required: Excellent English, written and spoken.
Desired: Experience in Data Analytics (ML, NN, and the like).
Competences
Ability to work both independently and within a team.
Good communication and teamwork skills to work in a multidisciplinary team.
Multiple project management abilities are expected.
Conditions
The position will be located at BSC within the CASE Department.
We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, and support for relocation procedures.
Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration.
Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus the 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement.
Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona.
Starting date: ASAP.
