Following strong trade growth in the region, NZTE Madrid is looking for an experienced, and dynamic professional to join the team as a Business Development Manager helping New Zealand companies enter and thrive in the Spanish market.


Who are we:

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) is the New Zealand Government's international business development agency.

We work with some of New Zealand's most forward-thinking companies, helping them to grow internationally bigger, better, faster for the benefit of New Zealand.

Based out of the New Zealand Embassy in Madrid, we service New Zealand companies from a variety of sectors interested in establishing and growing in Spain.


What you'll be doing:


This is an opportunity to work for New Zealand in an important international market; to make a difference for New Zealand businesses; and to help grow trade and business links between New Zealand and Europe.

Europe offers great opportunities for New Zealand companies across a range of sectors particularly those focusing on advanced manufacturing, marine, ICT and technology sectors.

We are expanding our team in Madrid, and we are looking for a highly motivated, experienced BDM to help New Zealand businesses grow in the Spanish market.


You will be responsible for proactively supporting a portfolio of customers across a range of sectors develop and execute their business growth plans in Spain.

Drawing on your own experience, knowledge, networks, and collaborating with NZTE colleagues and specialist advisers to help companies' senior leaders and in-market managers navigate the nuances of the Spanish market.

Your strength will be in identifying potential partners and opportunities, further developing, and growing new channels to market. Our customers are active across traditional channels (consumer & B2B) and increasingly eCommerce.

You will manage a busy portfolio of companies with varying work intensity and would expect to spend a proportion of time travelling to meet with customers, their partners and to develop your network connections.

A superb relationship manager and team player, you will work closely with NZTE's Madrid Trade Commissioner; with New Zealand teams in across the Mediterranean and across the wider Europe region; and with a broad network of business and public sector partners to help advance New Zealand's trade and economic development objectives across Europe.

What you'll need to be successful:

  • You will need to be a superb relationship manager and team player with excellent local networks and a solid understanding of how to do business in Spain.
  • You will have good understanding of international commerce and export rules, excellent business acumen and minimum of four years deep commercial work experience.
  • Ideally you will have strong interests or ties to New Zealand.
  • Your commercial acumen combined with your resourcefulness will assist you to manage a busy portfolio of companies.
  • Superior communication and expectation management skills are critical, as is the ability to build credibility and trust quickly and a willingness to 'roll up your sleeves' and do whatever is required to set your customers on a course for success.
  • Your enthusiastic, 'cando' attitude, proactive nature, creative problemsolving skills and ability to work in virtual teams will be critical to your success.
  • Fluent English and Spanish is required for this role (both written and verbal).
  • You must have the right to live and work in Spain to be eligible for this role.
  • Experience working with advanced manufacturing, marine, ICT and/or technology companies is advantageous
