Plexcitonic quantum nanostructures as a source of entangled photons for practical
photonic quantum technology hardware

The rapidly advancing field of photonic quantum technologies brings significant
opportunities in quantum cryptography, quantum modelling and computing, metrology,
sensing, spectroscopy and imaging, all with unprecedented capabilities. Entangled photons
resource in quantum optics experiments. Ensuring stable, reliable and _spectrally pure_
generation of the entangled photonic states on-demand has been a tremendous scientific
challenge in recent years. Currently, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are extremely
promising quantum emitters capable of generating biexciton states. Radiative biexciton
- exciton recombination cascade can ultimately lead to the emission of two entangled
photons. It is a very attractive resource for quantum information processing since it
potentially allows for the simplification of quantum circuit designs due to a reduced number
of entangling gates. However, utilising the full potential of quantum dots as two-photon
quantum emitters is hampered by the limitations related to emission-signal instability and
the low biexciton quantum yield. Nanoscale plasmon-exciton coupling can significantly
stabilise and improve the emission properties of quantum dots by producing hybrid plasmon
- exciton (plexciton) states that serve as quantum emitters, thereby overcoming the
constraints above.
The main goal of the project is to experimentally implement high-performance nanoscale
plexciton quantum emitters operating as on-demand sources of pure pairs of entangled
photons.
To achieve this goal, the following objectives must be fulfilled: (1) to design QEs based on
the QDs and plasmon nanostructures with implemented synergistic combination of plasmon
- induces effects; (2) to develop new approaches and methods to control different regimes of
plasmon-exciton interaction in the designed structures; (3) to optimize the conditions of light
- matter coupling to achieve the highest values of the generation efficiency, single-photon
purity, and entanglement fidelity for the photon-pair mode.
The project is essentially experimental, but is combined with theoretical simulations. This
includes the combination of nanomaterial preparation and processing techniques, optical
spectroscopy at the single quantum dot level, single photons manipulation and the use of
advanced computational modeling.
Science, Nanoscience or Photonics. Previous experience is preferred in one or more of

the following areas:
plasmonics, optics, luminescent nanocrystals, quantum dots, optical
spectroscopy, photon correlation spectroscopy. Good written and oral communication
skills in English are mandatory.

The
Nanomaterials and Spectroscopy Group at CFM is offering a postdoctoral position
(1+1 years) starting in July or earlier to work with Prof. Yury Rakovich, in collaboration with
Dr. Alexey Nikitin, Dr. Virginia Martinez-Martinez, and Dr. Vitaliy Goryashko.

The positions will be funded by MCIN and by the European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR

  • C17.I1, as well as by IKUR Strategy under the collaboration agreement between Ikerbasque
Foundation and DIPC on behalf of the Department of Education of the Basque Government.

Center. The salary will be of 35.650,44 euros during the first year before taxes.

The
Nanomaterials and Spectroscopy Group at the Center of Materials Physics
research topics in the group include optics of semiconductor quantum dots; optical
properties of nano-hybrid materials fabricated using nano-scale building blocks, such as
semiconductor quantum dots, heterostuctures, metal nanoparticles, nanoantenas and
organic functional materials; energy transfer and conversion in nanostructures on single
quantum dot level; novel experimental approaches to control, manipulate and probe with
light on nanoscale; optics of microcavities; plasmon enhanced spectroscopy; exciton
- plasmon interactions in hybrid nanomaterials and nonclassical light and multiphoton
Photonics.

Previous experience is preferred in one or more of
the following areas:
nonlinear
multiphoton absorption, plasmonics, quantum emitters, quantum dots, strong light-matter
coupling, ultrafast laser optics, photon correlation spectroscopy. Good written and oral
communication skills in English are mandatory.
