With industry growth supercharged by lockdown conditions in the global pandemic, and delivery-only restaurants (also known as virtual restaurants) now entering the mainstream, the future of food is digital.

However, there have been some clear problems with virtual restaurants from day one.

Pungent smells, queues of delivery drivers waiting outside and often unsociable operating hours have given delivery-only kitchens a bad reputation in local communities.

Inside, the kitchens are usually windowless, busy and punishingly hot, with workers "cooped up like battery hens" while earning low pay, and on zero-hour contracts.

In that environment, mistakes happen all too easily leading to errors in customer orders and staff injury.

What we're Building

It's time to take virtual restaurants to the next level At REMY Robotics, we use Virtual Restaurant Robotics (VRR) to solve the problems today's delivery-only kitchens face.

We're building the

world's first end-to-end ecosystem of virtual restaurants powered by autonomous robot-run kitchens. Our kitchens use software-defined and adaptive robots, computer vision, artificial intelligence and mechatronics that can ensure constant quality, adaptability to any recipe, and operational effectiveness across an endless variety of food production scenarios. Our food is already available in multiple delivery platforms and will be available on

our ordering app, a state of the art digital platform and parent brand to our

portfolio of virtual restaurant brands.

About the role:


At REMY we are constantly reimagining what the robotic kitchen of the future should look like and developing its elements making sure they are designed and built for robots, not humans, from the ground up.

Our robotics kitchens are made up of off-the-shelf robotic arms (for now) and a variety of our own mechatronic smart devices and appliances ranging from end-effectors for our arms, to smart cooling, heating and storage appliances.

We already have relatively mature working versions of most of these devices but there's still a lot of work to be done to scale these up, bring them to mass production as well as to develop all-new solutions for new features of our kitchens.


You will work closely with fellow mechatronics engineers as well as with our chefs, operations managers and other members of the technical team to design, prototype and produce efficient and effective mechatronic solutions for our robotic kitchens.

You will have an opportunity to contribute to define what strategy and direction we take as we scale and move these designs into mass production.


What success means in this role:

  • Deep understanding of mechanical engineering and design principles applied to new product development with scalability and design for manufacturability in mind.
  • Experience across other parts of the mechatronics engineering spectrum such as electricals, electronics hardware integration and firmware would be a strong plus.
  • A keen eye for elegant solutions is key.
  • Ability to grasp core requirements, absorb new ideas and extrapolate novel solutions.
  • Experience designing mechanical parts and electromechanical assemblies (experience with sheet metal parts is key, experience with other manufacturing technologies is a big plus).
  • Experience in scaling and moving designs from prototype phase to full scale production.
  • Expertise in design for manufacturing (DFM), manufacturing technologies, GD&T, tolerancing analysis, FMEA and quality assurance.
  • Experience using SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM or similar CAD/PDM softwares.
  • Handson experience in rapid prototyping in a workshop environment is preferred (3D printing, mechanical assembly, operating manual and power tools, etc.).
  • BSc Degree in Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineering or a related field plus substantial professional experience and/or related MSc degree.
