Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:
Position Summary:
This position utilizes practical and theoretical knowledge to perform laboratory procedures as outlined in the procedures manuals, ensuring the completion of assigned workload. This position may report to a Laboratory Director, Manager or Supervisor. Incumbents are subject to overtime and callback as required.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Performs stat and routine clinical laboratory testing consistent with written procedures under the direction of a Laboratory Section Manager and/or the oversight of a Medical Technologist. Responsible for the preparation, set-up, testing of specimens within the microbiology laboratory, in order to ensure timely and accurate results to clients. Maintains personal skills competencies and assures section in-service and education needs are met to comply with licensing and accrediting standards and regulations. Contributes to cost containment by appropriate utilization of supplies and proper preparation and disposal of reagents to assure cost effectiveness and efficiency. Performs related accountabilities/responsibilities as required or directed.This position does not directly supervise others.
Education and Experience:
Associate’s degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technician from an accredited institution or successful completion of an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least fifty (50) weeks duration in residence and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of
Medical Laboratory Specialist. One year of laboratory training or experience performing high complexity testing within area of specialty.
Licensure and Certifications:
Medical Laboratory Technician License. Certification by ASCP or eligible or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Work independently, be attentive to detail, and provide quality work Handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner Establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology related to blood collection Operate medical tools and equipment in carrying out phlebotomy procedures Maintain the confidentiality of employee, patient, client, and company information at all times Demonstrate commitment to compliance with applicable laws: federal and state regulations, including CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, Safety, and OSHA Regulations Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related softwarePhysical Requirements :
Frequent standing, walking, grasping, carrying, and talking Occasional sitting, reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers Light to medium lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 30 pounds Requires visual acuity
Work Conditions:
Environmentally controlled laboratory and medical office environment with constant exposure to biological, sharp instruments, and chemical hazards. Fast-paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent situations. Ability to adapt easily to changing work schedules and work overtime occasionally, as needed.
Reporting Structure : Reports directly to the Core Lab Day Shift Supervisor or Night Shift Manager.
