Overview: The student is expected to be involved in a project related to aquatic species and chicken, focusing on genetic information for traceability and pathogen resistance.
Key Responsibilities: During the stay, the student is expected to work in molecular genetics. This will involve laboratory assays for pathogen resistance, studying specific regions of the genome, and analysing the complete genome of the gilthead sea bream and chicken:
• DNA extraction.
• DNA quantification using NanoDrop and Qubit.
• PCR execution.
• Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS).
• Measure meat quality (FAME, Soxhlet) and carcass quality parameters.
Skills Developed:
• Technical Skills: Programming, lab work, etc.
• Soft Skills: Communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, leadership, etc.
Reflection: With these practices, the student will gain knowledge in the study of the genetics of emerging species in European aquaculture and local breed. Additionally, they will develop their laboratory skills.
