Context And Mission
The Earth System Services Group (ESS) at the Earth Sciences Department conducts interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research to enhance societal value of climate prediction services, atmospheric composition and weather forecasting. The group actively engages with society, decision-makers and businesses to exchange knowledge and develop user-oriented services. The aim of the ESS is to enhance knowledge and technology transfer and improve resilience, by accelerating adaptation to a rapidly changing environment.
The ESS group is looking for a social scientist from any nationality to design, evaluate and improve knowledge co-production processes. The candidate will be part of the knowledge transfer activities in different EU-funded projects. The candidate will closely collaborate with climate scientists, impact scientists and communication experts, as well as with potential and advanced users of climate information. The objective is to interact and build trust within the target stakeholder groups, understand climate information needs and expectations from climate services, and finally enable knowledge co-production processes. Applying social sciences methods, the successful candidate will propose knowledge co-production approaches for a more effective integration of users’ knowledge in climate services research, enhancing transdisciplinarity of the Earth Sciences Department.
The successful candidate is expected to learn about and participate in ongoing scientific activities of the ESS group and carry out stakeholder engagement activities at the international level. Experience in interdisciplinary and international teams, proven experience in organisation of stakeholder engagement activities and solid knowledge of participatory science are key for the position.
The successful candidate will be part of a diverse and international team of scientists, communication specialists and technical experts. Key Duties
  • Perform participatory methods to achieve user engagement and support citizen science and decision-making processes
  • Carry out user-engagement tasks within EU funded projects AGORA, nextGEMS)
  • Write reports and papers about stakeholder engagement, climate information impact on decision-making processes, knowledge co-production, transdisciplinary aspects of climate services research, and similar topics
  • Coordinate with other projects and initiatives to organize user-engagement activities at international conferences and other events and link with academic partners with social sciences background to carry out joint studies
  • Follow up on stakeholders’ feedback and needs raised in meetings and workshops and support knowledge transfer to and from stakeholders

Requirements
  • Education
    • A PhD in Social sciences, human geography or similar filed with demonstrated knowledge of social sciences theory and methods
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • More than two years’ experience in knowledge co-production, stakeholder and policy-maker engagement
    • Previous work on the topic of climate change adaptation
    • Previous experience with writing research project proposals
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in science-policy dialogue and citizen science will be highly valued
    • Professional experience with European institutions or International organisations will be valued
  • Competences
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
    • Ability to work in a professional environment within an interdisciplinary and international team
    • Good public speaking skills

Conditions
  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
