Description of Work Please note that all positions close at 12:00 AM on the posted closing date. You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date. This is an extended posting for Security Guard positions 65018327, 60018614 and 60018856, within the Ferry Division. Multiple Security Guard positions will be filled from this posting. We will be filling positions for the following locations: Cedar Island and Dare County. If there currently is not a vacancy at one of these locations, your application will be considered if a vacancy becomes available. Individuals in this class perform regimented work to meet requirements of Homeland Security regulations regarding access control to prevent injury and loss of life by reducing or eliminating introduction of harmful agents or devices on Ferry Division vessels and/or facilities. These positions monitor vehicle and pedestrian traffic, at facilities, to prevent unauthorized entry into restricted areas. Further they conduct and record screening of vehicles and passengers attempting to board ferries to prevent possible threats such as explosive devices intended to cause harm and injury to the traveling public, division employees and division equipment. As a front-line employee, these employees also will be required to serve as first responders in the event of an emergency while maintaining positive customer service contact. Security access control personnel will be expected to identify those who may intend to harm others without infringing on traveler privacy rights. Employees will be required to stand and walk in an outdoor setting, in all weather conditions, for most hours worked each day to screen vehicles in the loading lanes at ferry terminals. Vigilance to and awareness of suspect behavior is required, as well as resolution of conflicts with unruly travelers. Equipment routinely used: Handheld VHFs for communications with shore and vessel personnel, inspection mirrors. In addition to adhering to Department of Homeland Security regulations, employees must perform work in accordance with NCDOT workplace and safety policy. The position generally works shift work – 7 days on and 7 days off but schedule may be altered at management’s discretion as well as assignment of routine daily duties. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC01 $ 31,200
- $ 48,810 Management prefers applicants with the following: Basic knowledge of identifying improvised explosive devices and suspicious behavior. Skills in searching vehicles and baggage to detect harmful substances and devices. Skills in dealing with uncooperative travelers who refuse to provide identification or allow screening of their vehicle or bags. Experience in conducting rounds and sweeps to identify attempts to circumvent security measures. Minimum Education and Experience Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
