The Opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for a
Underwriter Liability
to generate and underwrite new business for the Markel team, based in our Barcelona office. You will engage with brokers and clients in the Catalonia, Aragón, Valencia & Balearics regions.

What You'll Be Doing

• Underwriting and growing the Liability book of business profitably, within the dedicated region
• Establishing, developing, and expanding broker and customer relationships
• Extending and consolidating our footprint as a recognized insurance partner by assessing, proposing, and negotiating insurance conditions for large and midsize projects, with a primary focus on Liability
• Working closely with our Madrid team regarding clients and brokers
• Assessing risks, coverage, terms, and conditions, driving related underwriting processes
• Working closely with the General Manager of the Barcelona office and the Liability department, to ensure development and profitability of the portfolio
• Developing the Underwriting strategy, guidelines, standards, processes and tools
• Managing the referral business
• Interacting with the other functions (Business Development, Technical Underwriting, Claims) across the business
• Championing continuous improvements and continually working with the team to improve end to end process and data accuracy
• Attending regular broker and client meetings and travel to represent Markel as required

Our Must-haves

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity and profitability.
• Validated experience in an Underwriting function and an understanding of the regional insurance market
• Effective interpersonal skills as you collaborate with local and partners. Spain and Europe
• Strong partnership skills for developing strategic planning to achieve team and company ambitions.
• Fluency in Spanish, Catalan and good level of written and spoken English
• A positive mind-set and people-oriented work ethic
• The legal right to live and work in Spain
